It's just a daily fluctuation or water weight. Your body can fluctuate up to 5 pounds from day to day... Just keep drinking water, and sticking the course and it will go away.

ON a daily basis your body will flux 1-3 pounds. It's just water weight. IF you weigh yourself daily, this is the deal.

Need a little more information here...

    water intake?
    time of day weighed?
    calories burned?
    calories for food?

1lb isn't a significant reason to worry, your body can fluctuate daily.
  • Try and weigh yourself at the same time everyday, especially in the morning. Also, it could just be water weight. Weight tends to fluctuate 2-3ibs a day.
  • I know I shouldn't but I jump on the scales every morning but touchwood scales always show a slight loss phew. But have probably jinxed myself lol

Water weight, make your food diary public so we can see what might be going on.

I weigh more for 2 days after weight training, the week I ovulate, a week before TOM, when I eat too much sodium and don't drink my 12 cups of water.

If you are going to weigh daily you have to get ready for fluctuations or it will drive you mad. I pick 1 day a week that I record that as the weight I way...if it's up that day, it's up, but it will go down eventually if I'm doing everything right.

And if you ate Chinese food, you might as well stay away from the scale for a couple of days while you flush out all that sodium.
  • Mama,

You shouldn't weigh yourself every single day because it will play with your mind and the more you don't see progress the more frustrated you will get and not stick to this. What I do is weight myself at the beginning of each week and at the end of the week. Knowing that a healthy weight loss is 1 to 2 pounds per week that is what I always expect to see or nothing. Also, I tend to weight myself early in the morning before I eat or do anything and in the same clothes so I can make sure that is my true weight for the start of the week, I do the same at the end of the week. This is a process! You will get there in time just stick to it and stay motivated! Feel free to add me mama!
  • Like everyone said, please don't worry. It's only water. Just water. Nothing but water. Or muscle... But in no way could you gain 1 lb of fat in one single day... One pound of fat would mean 3500 calories in excess in just one day! Unless you emptied 5 pints of chocolate ice cream the day before ...

I can fluctuate by as much as 7lbs in a single day depending on what I have eaten, drunk, time of the month and the amount of exercise I have done. I don't worry unless the extra lbs stay on for more than about 3 days. So far, so good!

Exactly. If you can't handle seeing the daily fluctuations, don't weigh yourself daily or you will drive yourself insane. This is why many people just do a once a week weigh-in.

I weigh daily because I like seeing the fluctuations; it helps me understand my body better, e.g. if I eat out for dinner at a restaurant, my weight will be higher the next day due to sodium laden restaurant food, then even back out in the next day or two. I have come to know the ins and outs of my ups and downs.

Definitely agree that it fluctuates...it could also be from water weight. Just give yourself a few days and check again.

"Weight Fluctuations: Why Do They Happen?

One of the most frustrating moments for many dieters is the weekly weigh-in. Sometimes, the results on your scales seem to bear very little relation to the week you've just had. Maybe you've been really good - but not lost anything. Or you've had a couple of meals out, and eaten more than a few candy bars - and yet you've dropped a pound.

    What's going on?

If you weren't dieting and weighed yourself every day, you'd still find that your weight wasn't steady: it might fluctuate by as much as several pounds. These fluctuations in body weight are commonly due to:

    Water retention
    Glycogen stores
    The amount you've eaten

    Water Retention

Water retention is caused by drinking too little water, or eating too much salt. If you don't drink enough water, your body will cling onto its water supplies; make sure you're drinking enough. And if you eat too much salt, your kidneys hold onto water instead of excreting it.

Women commonly retain water during the few days of the month just before their period. This "phantom" few pounds will drop off as quickly as it went on. Some medications can also cause water retention.
    Glycogen Stores

Glycogen - sugar - is carbohydrate stored in the liver and muscles; usually more than a pound in total, along with three or four pounds of water. This is your body's energy reserve, and gets used up during the day if you're not taking in enough carbohydrates to supply your energy needs.

When you eat, your body replaces the glycogen store and the water that goes with it - leading to a weight gain on the scales, even if you've only eaten a moderately-sized meal. This is absolutely normal and should not put you off eating carbohydrates!
    The Amount You've Eaten

Don't think about the meal you've just eaten in terms of calories - think in terms of weight. You could stuff yourself with pounds of fruit or salad for under a few hundred calories - but these pounds will show up if you stand on the scales straight after a meal. (Just imagine weighing yourself with all that food in your hands.) Once your body's had a chance to digest it, that food will disappear. The same applies with water - which has 0 calories, but definitely weighs something!

So how can you figure out whether you're losing weight or not, if your body's so prone to fluctuations? Try:

Only weighing yourself once a week, not every day
Always weighing first thing in the morning, before eating/drinking
Looking at the pattern of weight loss over time, rather than worrying if you've stayed the same or gone up in one particular week
Judging your success by the fit of your clothes, your energy and the good habits you're forming - not just by the number on the scales."

I weigh every day, but if you're going to do this then you have to be prepared for these fluctuations! It will go up and down, but as long as the general trend is downwards then I wouldn't worry :)

Your weight can for sure fluctuate,I know mine does when it's getting close to that time of the month or if I eat something with too much sodium.

Try not to worry, hang in there!

I weigh myself everyday bc it keeps me accountable. But your weight IS going to fluctuate between 1 and even 5lbs a day.

Just make sure you are only recording it once every week or 2 weeks or once a month or something like that. I weigh myself every day but only log it on MFP on Fridays. The weekly check-in shows me how much I'm losing per week.

Like others have said, if you can't handle seeing the scale change everyday, don't weigh yourself daily.. it will only cause you anxiety. I can handle seeing the scale move. My weekend was horrible foodwise. I weighed in Friday at 170.5 and logged it. By Monday the scale said 173.5, Tuesday it said 172.5 and then finally yesterday it went back to normal at 170. But I didn't log anything and am just waiting until Friday again. I've been doing this long enough to know that those numbers during the week are not important and Friday is what I want.
  • Thank you all for your advice x
  • Unless you can handle the daily fluctuations of your weight without letting it get to you, you really shouldn't weight yourself more than once a week. Sometimes we gain even when we feel like we didn't "deserve it." It's just part of the process.
