Desk Job Munchies

I, unfortunately, spend most of my work day behind a desk. Everyday between 2 and 4 I get a horrible case of boredom-driven munchies. I have found a few things that usually satisfy the hungry monster within... My two favorites are frozen grapes or a single serving pack of David sunflower seeds. What do you do to kill your munchies?

I stock a couple of chobani yogurts in the fridge. I also have some 100 calorie packs of raw almonds, some kashi granola bars, for snack if I need it
  • What I do is, I take a few healthy snacks with me and just munch on them when I get hungry. Usually drinking tons of water can kill those cravings as well. Sometimes I will grab a cup of tea with a little sugar and drink it slowly. That seems to help me. Or you can get up and walk outside for some fresh air if possible!

I have protein bars, almonds, oatmeal, fresh fruit, Vitatops (I like the CranBran), yogurt, green tea, and chocolate soy milk. Come rifle through my desk and I think you'll find something you'd like! :)
  • What is this Choabni yogurt??? I keep hearing about it but I don't know how it is different from regualr yogurt.

It's Greek yogurt which is higher in protein. Also, Chobani doesn't add artificial sweetners to their yogurt like Yoplait or some other companies.

I have the same problem, and it doesn't matter if i get back from lunch at noon, or if I don't get back until after 1, i am still ready for a snack at 2, and if i eat my snack at 2, then im ready for another one at 3...i agree with the boredom. I know that you are not supposed to use food as a reward type thing, but if i had enough snacks at my desk to munch for two hours I think i would do it, so i set work goals to get my snacks, for example, I want a snack at 2, i am not going to eat my snack until i have completed this such and such paperwork or report or whatever, and that motivates me to get my work done and i drink water during this time and then i get to have my snack, if I can hold off having my snack until 3 or 330 then i feel better because i usually have dinner between 5 and 530 so it isnt that long to wait for dinner. As far as snacks go, i try to change it up, if i eat the same snacks then they don't end up satisfying me and i find another snack and the next thing i know my mid day snack has turned into 500 calories. I like fruit-cut up strawberries, bananas, and blueberries, i like this snack because it also takes a little more time to cut up the fruit before i eat it so i am killing a little more time then when i inhlae a bag of cheezits. also, celery and peanut butter, gives me the crunch i always crave and some protein from the PB, anything that i can eat more of for the calories, skinny pop popcorn, two cups are only 78 calories and i feel good after that, again versus 12 cheezits that i would get for the calories. i'm constantly on the lookout for snack ideas

I read a study recently (sorry no citation) that stated that the average American consumed greater than 25% of their daily caloric intake in snack foods. So this is area is a huge opportunity for most people to lower their caloric intake.

I have myself a scheduled snack time for 2:00 in the afternoon ( I eat lunch at 11:00). I do this so that I can have a planned snack (and work break) at the same time everyday. This has lessened me getting hungry the rest of the time. I also make sure that I eat a high protein lunch as that keeps me fuller longer and I don't get as hungry. I usually have a protein shake. The one I drink is 160 cal and 34g of protein.

I also drink 8oz of water every hour. I use the waterlogged app on my iphone to remind me to drink each hour. By the end of the day I'm so full of water that I sometimes don't even want to think about the afternoon snack!!!
  • Thanks for the great ideas!
  • I've just in the last few weeks been getting the desk munchies. I eat my lunch at 1pm, but I'm done work at 6pm. I used to hide peanut M&Ms in my pocket (it's cold, so no melting :) ) but today my brother gave me one of his "builder" bars that's chock full of protein and is chocolatey. I plan to eat half at lunch and the other half if I get hungry later.

I pan to make some trail mix too. I think frozen grapes are a great idea!

Just like at home, I keep a well-stocked fruit bowl at my cubicle...peaches, plums, apples, strawberries and grapes are in it right now...that way, a healthy yummy snack is never more than an arms-length away!

recently i started eating Wasa (sp?)crackers and hummus. It's a pretty low calorie snack that fills me up pretty well. I also get my snack cravings around mid-afternoon, and this has really been helping me!

My favorites right now are kashi soft baked cereal bars if I want something sweet, or a handful of almonds if I'm looking for something salty, and a big glass of water to go with whatever it is. I like to make sure my snacks include some fiber as they will satisfy for a long time, and because you have to chew more so your mind will tell your body that you're getting full.

I used to reach for the "snack drawer" at work but I have resisted temptation by bringing lots of fruits and vegetables to snack on. I basically have to snack on these items all day because I'm chronically bored.

My new favorite snack are these cashew nut clusters from Costco. They have cashews, almonds and pumpkin seeds in them and they use honey to sweeten them. They are 150 calories for one ounce, which i measure out at home. I also saw a few people mention Chobani. I love it. It keeps me full while with other regular yogurts, I was hungry again in less than an hour.
  • I've only been here for a week and that's how long it's been since starting my new path to being healthy. I just started doing the snack thing at work. I've been taking veggies to work to snack on. But reading this post has given me ideas on what I should snack on to not be hungry! I love veggies, fruits and almonds.
