I'm semi new here to MFP. I was going good, then I fell off the radar for a bit. But I'm back and determined! My calorie intake is set at 1200 with no exercise. My scale has not moved an ounce. I am getting a little frustrated, I am working so hard at logging and watching portions and making better choices......but I'm getting discouraged. All this hard work and nothing??? I don't want to give up, but it's hard doing all this work with no reward. Any help/suggestions/ideas? BTW......I can't exercise because I have muscular dystrophy. I walk very slow and with a cane. The most exercise I can do is vacuum and light cleaning! ;)

Well, it depends a little on how long you've been doing it and what your starting weight is, because it does take time to start losing weight, especially if you're not terribly overweight to begin with. There's also the possibility that you're not taking in enough calories, if your starting weight is a little higher...I know it's discouraging, but keep making good choices, and evtually you'll start seeing the rewards!

I would suggest checking your scale. For a few weeks I thought I wasn't losing any weight and I actually was. I noticed this when I went to a doctor appointment and realized that I had actually lost 3 pounds. This is just a suggestion.

Maybe wear a pedometer to track your steps and just try to increase the slow walking, even if it is just 10 steps more each day. You don't mention your current weight or how much you have to lose but you have to be pretty small to require a 1200 calorie diet - if you are over say, 130 ish, you may be taking in too few calories. Keep in mind exercise comes in many forms and building any muscle any where can increase your metabolism ; can you use tiny dumbells for arm curls? Maybe even starting with soup cans? I have no experience with MD but a physical therapist or your physician might have some ideas as well. Best wishes to you!
  • Thank you everyone! Some of you asked my weight, I'm currently at 146. Last year at this time I was about 136 and feeling better about the way I looked and felt. But even at that, I was wanting to be around 125 - 130. The heavier I am, the harder it is for me to walk. The hard part is, it takes muscle to burn fat/calories. I'm losing muscle and gaining fat! I can't get that muscle back unfortunately.

I will look into getting a pedometer. That might help!

Thank you again for all your help! Any other ideas, keep 'em coming! :-)

Can you do upper body exercises while seated with the MD?? Something like light shadow boxing? Any form of exercise will help with that, if you can find something that is do-able with your medical condition.
  • Unfortunately my muscle loss is my upper thigh, hips, core and my upper arms, shoulders. But I'll try! So.....shadow boxing as in just boxing the air?
