Long concussion recovery

Hi all. Since losing a lot of weight about 5 years ago, I've really been on point with my fitness. I've kept in great shape for the most part. Recently, though, a severe concussion has set me way back. It's almost 2 months since I've been able to workout. I'm miserable. I can't fit into any of my clothes. Wondering if anyone else can relate and a timeline estimate to when I can get back to the gym?

What does your doctor say about this? I'm so sorry this has happened to you.

I feel your pain. Back in August I passed out and fell face first on pavement. had a head concussion for about 6 weeks. It really sucks, I will assume you forget simple things words and phrases. It is what freaked me out and got me going on the journey to get healthier.

I dont know what caused yours and how severe it is. Like previous poster says what did the doctor say. Did you have a CT or MRI done?

Most studies now show low levels of exercise help heal a concussion. Exercise bikes are huge in sports now for guys on concussion protocols.

So ... you went to the Dr, you had the required tests done, you asked about exercise since that is important to you, and the Dr said ... " ___________________________ ".

And you didn't ask about exercise then, because sometimes a knock to the head can make you forget things like that for the moment, when you went to the follow-up appointment, the Dr said ... "____________________________".

Hi all thanks for your input! I've been to the er twice, my PCP twice, and a neurologist.. all who said the only thing I can do is rest. My CT scan showed no bleeding. I asked about running because I love running and in times of stress, that is my outlet. I was told as recovery comes, running will be the last thing I do. I love cardio but I'm thinking I need to try some Pilates or something. I'm still in a lot of pain bc my job doesn't allow me to rest - high school teacher.

Go back and ask about things that might be less jarring such as swimming, cycling, pilates or yoga, walking ...

My concussion didn’t keep me out of the gym. I thought exercise helped me. Recovery took about 6 months.

Should have said I was lucky not to have to quit the gym. Do what your Dr says. Mine said there was no treatment for me except the passage of time.

Perhaps you can ask for a session or 2 with a sports rehab therapist who set up a specific tailored program for you.

Pilates will definitely keep you toned! I stick to mostly yoga, and it keeps me pretty fit. Doesn't have the same rush as running or getting your heart rate high, but is probably concussion friendly. My daughter had a nasty concussion last Spring...her head actually broke another girl's jaw during soccer. It was probably 4-5 months before she was back to speed. And multiple trips to diff specialists. Hang in there and get better!

Thank you all so much! I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing such a long recovery. I never thought I would be out if the gym this long. The only thing that helps honestly is sleep. So during the week after work I go to bed early and I really hope to go to the gym this weekend and try a bike. I'm ready to start some Pilates i thing that will be best for me in just not used to a workout without heavy cardio but I will try I must!
