Runner's Knee?

I pride myself in being able to run, especially since I quit smoking. But lately, I can't go beyond 2.5 miles without my right knee wanting to give out on me. Anyone else have this problem?
I stop and continue walking (usually uphill) which helps a bit, but if I start running again, the pain is unbearable. The pain is right under my knee cap. I can't run everyday or else I would be limping. I have to do one day off/one day on.
I feel like I could be running a lot longer if it wasn't for this pain. Anyone else go through this? I'm frustrated!
P.S. I do not take pills unless I'm dying, so I'm not going to take advil or motrin just for knee pain.

I feel your pain. I found out about 6 weeks ago that I have a couple of bone spurs. I had to take 3 weeks off, and am just now really getting back in the groove.
"Runners Knee" is very generic and can have any # of issues: floating knee cap, bone spurs, stress fracture, etc. For now, RICE - rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Take a few days off, and then slow your pace down a bit to see if that helps. If the pain continues, you will probably want to see a doctor.
If you have not gotten new shoes lately, or been fitted for them at a running store, it's time. Ill fitting shoes are one of the biggest contributors to running injuries.0 -
1. You might want to check with your doc. 2. Have you tried using an over-the-counter knee brace? 3. I am sorry your are having knee trouble.0

There an actual condition called runners/jumpers knee. I have that problem. If that is what it is the pain area would be about the size of a silver dollar and right under your knee cap. It is from, obviously the running and bouncing, and the impact of it on your knee. They sell a very simple strap for it you place right under your knee cap, I wear them every time I run. I actually just replaced my, bought them at ****'s 12.99 each. I would suggest picking some up and since the pain is bad now wearing them all the time for 2 weeks or so (they are very small no one can see it under things) and then wearing them when you run. I gave you a link so you could see them.

I'm not a runner, but had runner's knee, figure that out! It also comes from sitting too much, which is probably my case. There are many sites online that tell you exercises and stretches for it, if you are faithful to them, they should help. Mine has been vastly improved, though I still can't do a total squat (yet) LOL Stretching the hamstrings and calf muscles will help. Here's a good website: http://www.drpribut.com/sports/spknees.html
Good luck!

Thanks for all of your posts.
I do have a great pair of running shoes that I've had for about 6 months. Maybe it's time to change those. I am going to try and slow down my pace a bit. Right now, I'm running 1 mile in about 11 minutes.
The last post mentioned something about having runners knee because of sitting. I am actually sitting down ALL day because of work and only get up to use the bathroom or get something to eat. I wonder if being this inactive all day and then going to the gym and doing sudden movements is making this problem worse. I will have to see a Doctor about this.0
