Hi. I am wondering what I am doing wrong. My weight loss stopped a couple of weeks ago and I thought it was because I wasn't taking in enough calories (<1200/day). This week I am trying to consume 1400 cal/day, thinking my body would start burning off fat since it has enough calories. Instead, I have gained a little weigh. Anybody knowledgeable about this who can look at my info and tell me what I am doing wrong? Do I need to add even more calories?

age 43, height 5'10", weight 130
20 minutes low/medium speed cardio in morning (7x a week)
20 minutes low/medium speed cardio in evening (4x a week)
1 hr weight lifting in evening (3x a week)

5'10' and 130 pounds? That is why you are not losing weight. I am 5'4'' and that is right in the middle of the healthy range for me. That has to be very low for your height.

As above, also if you were under eating it may take time for your body to adjust to getting enough food and start losing again.

129lbs is the very lowest you should go according to the BMI scale.

I have to agree with everyone else. Why, at 5'10" and 130 lbs would you even WANT to lose any more weight? At that weight you are on the verge of being UNDER weight.

5'10" and 130 pounds is a BMI of 18.7, which is *barely* in the healthy range. Unless you are extremely small-framed, this is bordering on unhealthy. Also, at 43, your BMI should likely be more solidly in the "healthy" range.

If you have hopes of losing more weight, it would probably be a good idea to talk to a doctor and nutritionist.

I don't want to offend you or embarrass you, but I am going to ask anyway. :)
Do you have any history of an eating disorder? Women in their 30s-50s is the largest growing group of people with eating disorders, so please keep an eye on this.
  • Honestly at this point you're underweight. If you want to lose fat you should try staying the same weight and change your lifting program to gain more muscle. In addition, cut down on carbs and eat more healthy fats and protien. Just to inform you the healthy weight range for a woman with a medium frame at 5'10'' is 142-156. The heathly weight rang for a woman at 5'10'' with a small frame is 132-145. If you lose more weight your body will go into starvation mode and any time in the future that you eat more than you do now, your body will store that intake as fat (this is probably why you gained weight at 1400 kcal a day). With all of that exercise a nutritionist would tell you that you should be eating at least 1800 calories a day.
  • With all that cardio that you do, and your height and weight you should eat more. If you want to lose FAT not Weight, consume more protein.

:ohwell: You really shouldn't lose anymore.
  • Thanks everyone. I really only want to lose 2 or 3 pounds then I want to gain muscle after that. I am thin, but not skinny. My intake percentages are 35-40% carbs, 44% protein, 15-20% fat. I think that's plenty of protein to gain muscle. I am thinking that skin fold calipers combined with the scale are a better way to judge what is changing.

In that case it's all about body composition anyway, so weightloss of 2 - 3 pounds seems pointless, compared the fact that you need to lose body fat. that seems to point to increasing exercise, not decreasing caloric intake. but many other people have said that already.
