what are your diet/healthy food staples?

I am overshopping and wasting food and getting aggrevated.I hate to shop as it is.

  • Since I have started eating healthier, I shop every 3 days (4 days max). That way I don't buy as much and nothing spoils. I can't seem to shop just once a week and stock up because I have the same problem of wasting food. Sorry that isn't any help.

    we got to the point now, where we are very conscious food shoppers..clip coupons look for deals etc.

    so we tend to plan our dinner meals for each week, and buy accordingly. i work nights, the wife works days..so we make our own lunches and breakfasts.

    i usually have oatmeal, greek yogurt, whole grain cream wheat, egg white, whole grain cereal, soy milk, grapefruit for breakfasts.
    for my lunches, i make myself brown rice with different veggies, veggie burgers with whole grain bread, all natural peanut butter, quinoa, etc..
    for snacks, i have almonds, roasted unsalted soy nuts, cottage cheese etc.
  • Cottage cheese
    light cheese sticks
    fresh fruits
    fruits packed in juice (no sugar or sugar substitutes)
    frozen fruit (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries)
    low fat and/or fat free cream cheese
    brown rice
    bananas (if they start getting toward being past prime, I peel, cut, and freeze them for making ice cream)
    Natural peanut butter
    raw nuts (for me-almonds and cashews are my favorite)
    strawberries
    grapes
    frozen veggies
    fresh broccoli


    If I have an abundance of something like strawberries or grapes, I just freeze them before I'll let them go bad. Then use them in my smoothies. :)

    Ryvita Crackers

    Then I plan what I'm going to cook for lunch, go and buy just enough ingredients for it. Cook a massive batch, portion it into 5 and have the same thing for lunch all week. I don't eat meat so this works is fine for me

    Buy whatever you can frozen, or freeze it. The ice box is your friend!
    I often bake my own muffins, and have frozen gluten free waffles to eat for breakfasts, as well as greek yogurt.
    Also, having a fruit basket near your TV, computer, or right by the front door is helpful to remind you to use the fruit/eat it.

    The healthy food staples I always have on hand:

    Yogurt
    String Cheese
    Nuts (Almonds, cashews, soy nuts)
    Boneless skinless chicken breast
    Jicama
    Avacado
    Berries (Blueberries, Blackberries, Strawberries)
    Fiber One 90 cal bars
    Natural Peanut Butter
    Celery
    Lettuce

    These are just a few things that I always have on hand! :)

    Make a plan for what you are going to eat for the week and list the ingredients you need. Just buy these plus your regular snacks.
    This makes shopping quicker and saves you money. I use an iPhone app called Mealboard to do this.

    My shopping list almost always includes these things (though I don't buy everything every week):
    natural yoghurt
    almonds
    prawns
    salmon
    chicken thighs
    tinned tomatoes
    lots of fruit and veggies
    muesli
    hommous
    lentils
    chocolate (not every week though!)

    I could not agree more!
    I buy fruit that is in season (when they are their cheepest and tastiest!) and I put it in one cup portions and freeze them!
    That way I have them all year long to make smoothies :)

    I do the same thing with vegetables. Like zucchini - I slice it up in one cup portions and freeze it :)

    Can you freeze mushrooms? They go bad before I get to use them and Im not sure how to store them,also do you know where to get the ones with the ultraviolet light?They give more vitamins. I need them lol

    On a regular basis, I'll always have nuts, chicken, frozen green veggie's, peanut butter, cheese, onions, garlic, unsalted pretzels, eggs, turkey bacon, and olive oil. Those things are a must minimum in my house at any given time.

    milk (almond for me, cow for everyone else, and extra cow's milk to make yogurt with)
    fruits: banana, apples, grapes, strawberries
    veggies: baby spinach, romaine lettuce, onions, carrots, frozen broccoli
    rice cakes
    peanut butter
    eggs
    whole wheat bread
    brown rice
    rotiserie chicken-I buy the one from Sams and freeze the meat and use it on salads
    tuna
  • I'd suggest to start off slow, and try to minimize as much sugar and salt as possible. Purchase more lean meats such as chicken breast and sirloin steak.

    Broccoli has become my new best friend in this journey. i have the cambells v8 garden broccoli soup cartons everywhere (90 calories per serving!!) they are super filling and taste great, and a bunch of bags of broccoli cuts mixed with carrots and cauliflower, just $2 a bag, 30 cal per serving, they are meals that hardly go bad, are ready to go in 5 mins or less, and taste awesome. my ultimate secret: to cut out putting oil or butter on the broccoli and be able to eat it raw i put a little bit of freshly ground sea salt and pepper with lemon rind. which cuts out the tablespoon of olive oil i used to stir in.
