I have had a crappy year; divorce, illness, brother and sister died. 2018 is my year to get me back under control and be happy. I want to hike to Havasu Falls in June. I need to be in better physical shape and feel strong. I am 48, it’s harder now but not impossible. I have not wanted anything this much in a long time. How do I stay motivated.

Motivation can fade but commitment and discipline and habit don't. Use this first surge of motivation to think of how you can set yourself up to succeed: times of day that you will check into MFP, time to plan your food, get a food scale to weigh it, make plans on how you will make sure distraction or whim can't hijack you, set up an increasing workout plan that will get you to your goal by June. A calendar on your wall with workouts penciled in and checked off. A bound-book workout diary - somehow it's more real to me if it has to be written with a pen! Buy a poster of Havasu Falls and hang it where you will see it all the time. All just ideas, you will have your own that will work for you.
If there is anything you don't understand how to do, use this first surge of determination to search the forums. Someone on here has posted the same problem or issue and gotten good advice. As you read the forums on here, find people who make sense, send them friend requests with messages telling them why you liked their approach. Open your diary to friends so they can see your food choices. That keeps me paying attention!
I feel you; I am 61 and planning to climb Angel's Landing in Zion in April. I'm losing that 20 lbs, running again, and doing stairclimber at the gym to prepare for the vertical gain.
I'm so sorry about your 2017. I know your dream of hiking to Havasu Falls can come true for you. Best!
