Logging meals

When logging your meals, for example a taco salad, do you have to log each topping separate? Or just by typing taco salad does it figure those in?

If it's something you made, you should log each ingredient separately, preferably according to weight. If it's something you purchased at a restaurant or pre-packaged, you obviously can't know for sure and have to trust the restaurant or brand info. Logging a random "taco salad" is going to get you random, very inaccurate numbers.4

If you want it to be accurate log each topping separate. So many of the entries in the database are user created that you really don't know what someone else put on their taco salad. If you are eating out some places have nutritional information.4

Also, if it is something you made, and you have it fairly often, use the "save meal" feature on your log and the next time you have it, you can log the saved meal & just tweak it if necessary.6

Log each ingredient. You don’t know what is in the database taco salad entries.3

Use the USDA database to search foods before looking them up in MFP database to make sure you're getting an accurate count as well. Some of the entries on MFP are inaccurate.1
