On 22nd December I was 77.4kg, On Jan 2nd 79.7 a weight gain of 5lbs. Since then I have been in a deficit eating 1500 cals per day, I weighed myself this morning 5th Jan and I am still 79.7kg
People say a lot of post-Christmas weight gain is fluid retention? Is this true? If so how long will it take to drop 5lbs again?

More than 2 days, less than forever.7

It took me 10-12 days to lose my 2 kg gain over Christmas. I was not strict but cut back on all the carbs and sugar. I think rather than actually gaining true 'weight/fat' over that time, it was actually having more food in my body. Took a while to rid itself lol.

Some of that will be water weight, so hopefully just a few days for that to go, then for true fat loss you need to eat at calorie deficit, for 1lb a week that's 500 cal deficit a day.
Weight sure goes on quicker than it goes off0 -
Five pounds could be both water retention and some fat gain. So you might only have a few pounds to lose.
With only a few to lose, setup MFP to lose .5 pounds per week and be patient. The water weight gain should stabilize soon and for actual loss of fat you gained, .you can lose around 2 pounds per month.1
