Home treadmill

Hi
Just wondering if anyone has seen results from walking on a home treadmill 5 times a week. I am walking at a pace of 4-5kmh 30-45 mins each session
I know weight loss is a calorie defect however I am wondering about change in body shape (e.g. toning legs)
At the mo I am feeling a bit disheartened as I seem to be getting water retention since I've started using the treadmill on a regular basis I'm at the start of my 3rd week. Is this normal?

Cardio is great for general fitness but it won't really do much in way of 'toning' your legs. Resistance work is still the best for shaping/building muscle.
Water retention usually happens for a week or so after you start a new routine but should be gone by week 3. That said, so many other things can cause water weight that it can seem almost random. Just consider it part of the journey and know that it's temporary.3 -
I've seen great results running about 45 mins / 5x per week, but that's a little more of a burner than walking?4

I second this! I highly recommend starting a strength training program (start easy with simple body weight exercises that don't involve equipment and build your way up.) A combination of this and cardio-based exercise is great for you. Also worth mentioning building muscles will increase your metabolism and not only help "tone" but also assist with overall weight loss1 -
Anyone who thinks running will not tone their legs has clearly never consistantly run 70 miles a week.1

Whilst that's a fair observation, given that high volumes of running do lend themselves to a very lean physique, a slow walk for 45 minutes isn't going to give the same outcomes.1 -
Some people will retain water longer. Especially if you never walked this much before. You can retain for as much as 3-4 wks.
Walking is a great workout. And yes you can see definition in your legs from walking/running/biking.0
