It's so hard to do keto and MFP forums because every time i read through them i end up having to bring my popcorn and it throws me out of ketosis.
Oh, Jimmy Moore? Shining example of the effectiveness of keto:
Feel free to link to some actual science from some of those sites which proves that you can lose weight in a ketogenic state while in a caloric surplus.
Keto is not magic. It does not defy the laws of energy balance.

Here's my few pointers about it:
1) you HAVE to be strict in tracking what you eat. Meal prep and have keto friendly snacks on hand.
2) when in doubt, eat more fat...and then eat some more fat after that.
3) you will experience headaches, withdrawals and other symptoms in the first 2 weeks at least but they will pass....the reward to getting through that is absolutely amazing. More focus, more energy. Fat loss, yes but that's just a perk of feeling so much better overall.
4) don't make it difficult, especially in the beginning. Focus on simple, keto friendly meals.
5) don't just do it for fat loss. there are a ton of other benefits so focus on feeling those too. The fat will definitely fall off but like i said the other benefits are amazing.
6) it sucks not having carbs but remember, you can eat all the bacon you want.
7) Don't listen to other people on here and there NON-keto eating and exercise tips. If you wanted tips for that then YOU WOULD HAVE ASKED. It's your choice to do Keto, stick with it and the benefits WILL BE amazing.
8) back to #1, especially in the beginning, you HAVE to be strict about your macros...don't even count calories but focus on at least 75% fat, 20% protein and 5% or less carbs.
Some people do find that keto works well for them because it's an easier way for them to reach a deficit. But the deficit is why it creates weight loss (for those who lose weight). It's how anyone loses weight, regardless of what plan they happen to be on (or whether they're on no specific plan at all).
That's actually an over-simplification that borders on being outright wrong. While calories are always important, the Keto diet works because it limits your intake of sugar down the a level that literally changes your blood chemistry.
This makes no sense. I'll go through it below. It's a lot like when a person gets diabetes, the loose a ton of weight because the body doesn't release insulin to process the sugar, so an early stage diabetic can eat 5000 calories a day and not gain weight.
Not early stage, not with T2D, anyway, but yes, when you stop producing insulin you are unable to use carbs you ingest and thus if diabetes progresses to that stage without being caught, weight loss is common, and you tend to put on weight when first being treated.
This has nothing to do with keto. With diabetes the glucose (sugar) is excreted through urine and your brain gets its energy through a process called ketosis whereby the body re-learns how to burn fat for energy.
No, your body always knows how to burn fat for energy, and always does. The problem for diabetics is that they (due to insulin resistance and then inability to manufacture insulin) cannot properly use carbs for energy (or any other purpose).Ketones are the chemical that is released when the fat is burned.
The same process applies to the Keto diet except instead of diabetes causing your body to stop processing sugar, it's your diet. Limiting your Carbs forces your body into ketosis, which means it burns fat for energy instead of glucose (sugars and Carbs).
Everyone burns fat for energy at times, and if in a calorie deficit you will burn body fat for energy.
Someone eating a high fat, low carb diet will burn more overall fat -- because that's what they are eating -- but not more body fat (assuming the same deficit).Without sugar, you'll find that you feel better, have a clearer mind, have more energy for everything. You'll learn that you've been poisoning yourself with sugar your whole life. It's crazy. You'll be able to exercise longer, run faster, and eventually, lift heavier.
Many, many people do not have this experience.
The fastest runners are not ketogenic, btw.So, it's way more than a "calories in calories out analysis", although I'd agree, creating a deficit always helps with any diet.
You've said nothing to show it's not CICO.5 -
For the people who think calories don't matter, at least in my case that's not true at all. I ate whole food keto for half a year, making sure to track every bite. My weight was definitely affected by how much I ate, even if all I ate was chicken, eggs and vegetables. The diet taught me that a calorie is literally a calorie. I also want to note that the diet was very limiting and people always told me that cravings would disappear after a few months, but they just got more intense. I went on the diet thinking it'd be the only way I could control my eating with junk food, and after the diet my binge eating got tremendously worse. I lost a lot of weight from the diet, but then gained it all back and got a new eating disorder for a while lol. It was fun.3

Remember to "over consume" water during the first week. When I tried it last year, that was a major life saver from experiencing a severe Keto-Flu. Shoot for close to a gallon of water/day. There has been a lot of great feedback from the forum so far!1

The thing is that if you over consume water, you also need to "over consume" sodium, not doing this will guarantee keto flu.

You should search the threads and groups for keto info. It's a huge fad right now and so many people ask about it, I'm sure you'll find what you're looking for and more.1

wow, some BS keto advise in here. "eat more fat, and then eat more fat." or "eat as much bacon as you want." < that is 100% pure nonsense and horrible advise to give someone. The ketogenic diet is not some magically diet. You do NOT magically lose weight because you switch to keto. It's all about caloric deficit. I've seen many people get fat as *kitten* cause they thought they could eat as much fat as they wanted too.
Let's drop the buzzword and talk about what's actually happening. Eating very low carbohydrates causes your body to burn dietary fat as its main fuel source. You eat smaller, high fat meals with little to no carbs so that you do not increase your blood sugar. This makes it so that you eat fewer times per day, less calories at each meal, and never really feel hungry.
That's a lot different than taking a regular diet and just eating fewer carbs. That sort of diet will keep your body burning glucose for fuel and you'll feel miserable, hungry and crash soon gaining all the weight back.
No one promotes the idea that you can physically eat as much as you want and lose weight with Keto. What they are explaining to you is that you feel like you can eat whatever you want, and it's still hard to even hit your daily goal of calories.6 -

I went on a "regular diet" and ate fewer carbohydrates (that is, I reduced the amount of everything I ate so I was eating fewer carbohydrates than before) and I didn't suffer any of those things (feeling miserable, excessive hunger, crashing and gaining the weight back). This seems like a vast over-simplification. The truth is that, for some people, eating fewer calories is an effective and sustainable way to lose weight. Keto isn't the only path to avoiding misery and regaining.3 -

Funny...I didn't do keto, nor did I do low carb when losing weight...I never felt miserable...I never had this crazy out of control hunger...I didn't crash...I lost weight easily and have maintained for going on 5 years.5 -
I've been seeing so many keto threads recently! And a lot of strong opinions.
OP, you were asking for stories. I'll give you my short story. I tried keto for about 4 months last year and couldn’t hack it. I was miserable. Even after getting over the initial keto flu, I never experienced any energy increase, in fact I was tired all the time. I was more full, but the high fat made me feel heavy all the time and nauseous pretty regularly. I went back to a more balanced diet with moderate carbs and my energy level is back to normal and I never have the heavy feeling anymore.
And yes, I’ve had people tell me I wasn’t doing keto right, needed more sodium or never got into ketosis. I was extremely strict about it, it just simply was not for me.
I’m really only putting this out there as an example that keto doesn’t work for everyone since a lot of the posts seems to be from people who did or are doing well on keto. You should try it, and if it works for you, that’s awesome! I’ve known several people that have been very successful and love it both for weight loss and maintenance.5 -
I tried Keto once when I was trying to cut some fat (like 4-5kg) I found it IMPOSSIBLE to stick to my calorie limit! I was so hungry and miserable all the time!
My diet was something like a butter coffee pre workout (my workouts sucked as well) eggs after the gym, lunch would be chicken thighs cooked in butter and greens, dinner would be steak and greens and a tiny handful of nuts after dinner. The portion sizes were tiny and not filling at all for me and even though I was eating a lot of fat.
I would often end up binging on carbs on the weekend and throwing myself out of a deficit. It also made me feel kind of depressed? I have never felt this way when cutting on a normal macro split.
It may not have worked well for me due to being of healthy weight and active, also I’ve heard it can not work as well for women.
Just my two cents!1 -

I'm eating a calorie deficit of whatever I want and I feel way better than when I ate keto. Certainly not crashing on glucose, lol. Heck I had a pancake breakfast with walden farms syrup a couple hours ago and I feel fine. I do eat a lot of protein and fats most days, but I also eat a lot of carbs and I don't feel cruddy from it. In fact I have a lot of energy and I don't get hungry often.
Eating keto for months made me crave carbs and sweets like crazy. It was depressing. I wasn't hungry, but I felt very deprived.0 -
My maid of honor and myself are working to form healthy habits which include the Ketogenic Diet. I am pre-diabetic with a long family history of diabetics (along with a plethora of other ailments amongst them all) and I feel like this is the best way to reboot my body. I don't plan to use Keto for life. I do plan to go from Keto --> Paleo --> Whole30 and basically find a balance of good ol' healthy eating habits, which will just be a customized concoction of these three methods alongside counting calories with a habitual regimen of exercise. At least, that's the long-term goal. It's called a diet, but I am looking for a lifestyle change. I do feel like moderation is key to everything in life, but I don't know how to find that without structure. Personally, even though I do feel the sugar withdrawls, it really is nice to not be constantly thinking of when I can enjoy my next meal or snack. The Keto meals have been very satisfying. Plus, I just naturally love eggs and avocados and this allows plenty of that. Well wishes everyone! Oh, additionally, my friend and I upgraded to the Premium MFP as it allows customization to track Macros. Major Bonus!5
