Returning to MFP ... with health challenges

I am dealing with underlying joint & muscle issues that rose to the surface when I joined a fitness program back in April 2016. I have not had a stiffness/pain free day since.

I ended up developing chronic insomnia and bad anxiety, but that is now under control for the most part.

Although I need to lose weight, my primary goal is simply to get moving as best I can and not gain anymore.

I can’t run anymore. Plus I have to be very careful with my neck and shoulders. This will be a slow and steady process. Unlike go hard or go home - as I did in the past.

I am an 47-year-old, good-humoured Mom of 2. If you can relate to any of this - feel free to add me

Hi Erin. Welcome! I'm sorry it's so rough! May I ask: how old (ish) are you?
Feel free to add me regardless!

I have similar health issues myself. I just turned 48 last week.

I don't let it stop me from being active but I have to be very smart about how I go about it. I walk quite a bit which actually helps the stiffness until the aching sets in. I take short walks often throughout the day. I find stretching to be very helpful. I've always enjoyed Yoga and will be starting back to class this coming week at the Y.

In the past I've been able to enjoy Zumba if I take out as much of the impact as possible. There are several retired people in the class, a benefit of going to the Y and taking daytime classes and several of us keep it low impact.

I'm thinking of trying Pilates though I've never been a big fan.

I also enjoy some Pump type classes with very light weights depending on how I'm doing at the time.

Sent a friend request. I’m 53 with a bad knee. I miss Zumba and hiking.

I'm fairly young (20) but I am also starting out here as a medically complex person. I can sympathize with how tough it can be to sort things out when you're dealing with so many other issues. I also have chronic pain and stiffness, so I'm with you on this!

Feel free to add me as a friend if you would like :)

Consider if some of the insomnia and anxiety may be *in part* related to peri-menopause?

I’m in my 30’s and have a similar situation. I have a bone disease, had multiple surgeries and cancer with major surgery. I focus on exercise that makes me happy not working out to lose weight. I’m not allowed to lift more than 30 lbs, my surgeries have made running and any high impact workout impossible. I also have bone tumors that affect range of motion and repeated damage. So for me, riding a bike repeatedly rubs a muscle over a tumor so that’s not happening. So I walk the dog, walk with my kids, do some sit ups, light aerobic exercise etc just enough to feel good get my heart rate up etc

Jane Fonda has made some recent workout tapes that are good since she’s older and has a replaced hip they’re pretty gently and yet a little heart raising.
