Reading the posts listed in the stickied threads at the top of each section is probably the best advice I can give you to start with!

This thread is a great place to start:

I joined Dec 30 and already down 4 pounds.

What changed - logged my food, realized my work lunches were killing me, always make my own food now, and I stick to my calorie goal. Oh, and I also bought a kitchen scale and plan on buying a portable scale.

What hasn't changed - I still hit the gym 5 days a week like I have done the past 5 years.

I am testament that hitting the gym will not compensate for a terrible diet. It probably kept me from gaining insane amounts of weight but I was still not healthy.

Thanks for the reply, I’m new to food logging my meals. I haven’t bought a scale yet, but I’m planning to soon. I have been making small changes in my diet and nutrition which have helped a great deal. I’ve been doing so so on sticking with my caloric intake, but I’m hoping to improve. It’s been a learning process, to say the least. Lol You’re def. right on the whole bad diet comment. I always went to the gym a couple times a week and wouldn’t lose much. After making certain changes, I’ve seen better results and hopefully will continue to do so. Good luck on your fitness journey!

I used to joke that the only reason I went to the gym so often was so I could pig out on ice cream and cookies. I probably would have gained 100 more pounds over the years had it not been for the gym.

Thanks for the info. I didn’t think the food logging was as important, I would always start and then stop after a while. Hopefully I’ll be able to stick with it on this app.

Be consistent. That's where most people trying to lose fail.

A food scale is an awesome tool. I use to just grab the whole bag of chips because measuring a serving would be depressing (in my biased mind). Then I started weighing my food and all the sudden, I found most servings were satisfying.

Second thing, not logging something because I am ashamed I ate eat doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Accept it, log it, and all the sudden I feel empowered. Not lying to yourself is an amazing feeling.

I started a serious weight loss program in March. Dropped about 15 pounds in a month doing lazy keto - just cutting out carbs. Then I hit a plateau.

I was talking to a friend of mine who is a nurse. She works with diabetic children and teenagers. She said to me "Are you logging your food?" "No." "Try that" she said.

I started logging and what do you know? Started losing weight again. A lot of people underestimate the calories they eat. I certainly did.

    Welcome,

I think these two links are extremely helpful and can help you get the most out of MFP:

    http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/1234699/logging-accurately-step-by-step-guide/p1

    http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/1080242/a-guide-to-get-you-started-on-your-path-to-sexypants/p1

The first covers accurate logging and some of the tools in MFP to help you make things easier. The second discusses caloric needs and setting goals. These two posts completely changed my MFP experience and helped me be much more successful, so I hope they do the same for you.

    ~Best wishes on your journey
