Juice Cleanses? Are they worth it?

I've been thinking of doing a 3 day juice cleanse but just not 100% sure on it.
What are your thoughts?

They don't do anything...22

One of my rules is to never drink my calories. Liquids just don't have the same effect of filling someone up as the same number of calories coming from solids. Water all day erryday.
There's nothing you can't get from a juice cleanse that you can't get from just eating fruits. If anything, the juices are worse because of added sugars, the fruits are ol' natural.
But if you're into it, go for it. Your life.

Waste of time and fruit & veggies. Also unless you're super constipated, your body is cleansing just fine.11

There is nothing wrong with drinking juice if you enjoy it. But no point in using it to replace food. You don't have anything that needs cleansing that is just an advertising ploy to get you to buy into some diet fad.
Your liver and kidneys (providing they are working correctly) will cleanse your blood all your life.
Eat the delicous fruit and veggies and enjoy them for the nutritious vitamin filled food items that nature designed them to be.12 -
Hi, there's quite a bit of negativity here so I'll put my 2 pence in. I'm on my tenth day and it's going great. 14lb lighter and not at all hungry. Energy levels are up and I am still training 2-3 hours a day. If you go for it be prepared for a very rough couple of days at the beginning. This is in the form of headashes and a touch of Hanger worth it though.
Not for everyone but I don't regret it at all.

What are you putting in your juice?12 -
Nope, if it’s not sustainable to eat that way forever, what’s the point?11

There's no negativity...a juice cleanse cleanses nothing. You lost a bunch of water weight and are likely consuming very few calories...nothing magical about the juice.
Beyond that, dietary fat and protein are essential to proper nutrition...you're not in anyway getting proper nutrition...43 -

If I'm drinking my calories they are going to contain alcohol.79

I'll occasionally drink a breakfast protein shake because it's easy, but yeah. Generally speaking. I don't drink calories.4 -
I think it depends on some of your goals. like if you feel constipated or something they might be good. if you don't drink a lot of water maybe a good idea. however I think drinking juices you have to be careful they are not full of sugar.3

What are you hoping to accomplish with this juice cleanse OP?
Is it to rapidly rid yourself of water weight, through some prolonged bathroom time, during which you'll have time to catch up on your reading material of choice, other than when you are groaning in pain wondering why you did this to yourself?
Is it to deprive yourself of essential nutrients like fat and protein for a few days, just to see if it will have any adverse effects?
Is it to experience the awesome feeling of eating solid food after 3 days of nothing but liquids, which is sure to result in a rebound in scale weight?
Is it to delude yourself into feeling like you are energized and have enhanced mental clarity, when in fact, you are just desperate to justify your choice?
If you answered yes to any of the above, then yes, I think this juice cleanse is for you.37 -
honestly, I would get horrifically ill if I was just living off carbs (and simple carbs at that) for 3 days, don't think I could stomach it and would most likely pass out before the end. I like to make every meal balanced, so if I have a smoothie (which I often do for breakfast), it has protein powder, greek yogurt, almond butter, and oats in it, along with whatever fruits/veggies I want. I could get behind drinking something like that for 3 days, although the boredom might get to me. But each to their own, good luck with whatever you decide to do6

I tried one once, was starving and miserable by the middle of day 2, and went back to eating real food. Felt like a sucker for the money I had wasted! Just eat real food and track it.9

Pointless and (if it's a purchased "cleanse") often overpriced for a few juices. I think you would likely do better spending those three days working on putting together a healthy diet you want to be eating going forward. It's not going to "detox" or "cleanse" anything.
But 3 days won't hurt you.6 -
Unlike some, I do drink my calories and I find liquids filling. Two cups of coffee and I'm full for the next 6 hours.
I do 3-day juice cleanses a few times a year. I think they're great. I've done 5/6 days, but 3 day is effective and easier to do.
I rarely make my own juices because buying produce is more expensive than buying juice and cleanup of my juicer such a pain. My favorite is Kreation Organic juices. They're very filling and delicious. I like the lowest sugar options at Pressed Juicery and their discontinued Brazil nut milk is possibly the most delicious thing I've ever tasted.. Nektar Juice has way too much sugar and not enough variety of vegetables for me, although I occasionally buy a juice there for a snack.
I drink 5 vegetable/green juices and 1 nut milk per day. I usually add a little (1/4 tsp or so) fat to each juice, usually olive oil or coconut oil since I think the vitamins and minerals absorb better with some fat. I rarely have fruit in more than 1 of the juices each day, and even that one is mostly vegetables.
A juice cleanse makes my skin really pretty. It completely eliminates my seasonal allergies for a couple of weeks to a couple of months. It makes me feel energetic. Yes, typically I lose a few pounds and don't regain it when I eat solid food. But I don't do them for weight loss. I do them because they make me feel and look so good.
If I wanted to use juices as a weight loss plan, it'd probably take me 3-4 month. No thanks. If I had just 3-5 lbs to use, yes, I'd use juices to get it off quick.35 -

If you think you lost 14 pounds of fat you're in for a rude awakening once you put solid food into your body again.33 -

I'm glad you are happy with a juice diet but keep in mind that your initial weight loss will include a great deal of water. So unless you take that into account, and lose more than your goal weight, if you don't continue eating/working out for a deficit you will regain this weight. Also, I'm sure we can all agree that juice fasts are not sustainable long-term nor are they meant to be. So you still have to teach yourself new habits to lose/maintain weight. Further, many people who eat very low calories will find themselves binging and in a pattern of yo-yo dieting. Last, weight loss does not have to be miserable. That is why most people on this site will advise against juice diets and recommend that you just alter your eating/work out habits now via MFP to create a deficit, instead of suffering through a low calorie diet which many on here have tried, but failed.11 -

When out with friends on a cold winter evening, I sometimes save a couple of hundred for a hot apple cider. But if I haven't got the calories, there's always chai tea.0 -
No they are not. I've tried it twice. I have never gained anything from a juice cleanse that I couldn't have achieved just eating whole fruits and veggies.5

What makes you think something in this juice magically made you drop 14lbs in 10 days? If that was actual bodyfat you'd be looking at a deficit of
3500kcal * 14 /10 = 4900kcal per day.
Does that sound realistic to you in any way?
And if it does, can you explain what this juice does to burn so many calories?10 -
I did green smoothies for a while - 2 green smoothies; breakfast and lunch; was hardly hungry at all during the day. Ate supper like usual. Lost some weight, felt OK. But it really became a pain to keep up with it... between constantly having to buy significant amounts of fruits and veggies, then to wash them all...and to make the darn things and then clean the blender every day - it got to be too much work. Because I was doing this for me but still had to make normal meals for the family...
Not sure if the weight I lost was just water weight or not, but I will say they were satisfying and I was not hungry or hangry while I did it.
Juice would be different I think because the fiber isn't there to help fill you up.4 -
I think you should juice your veggies and blend your fruit. When you juice your fruit, you take out the fiber that counters the sugars in your fruits. I like to drink fruit and veggie smoothies once or twice a week for breakfast. It's a great pick me up and leaves your bottom half feeling very light. I personally would not do this for more than one meal replacement per day. I get too hungry for solid food, but to get an extra serving or two of veggies in for the day, I think they are great!1
