Reading the posts listed in the stickied threads at the top of each section is probably the best advice I can give you to start with!
This thread is a great place to start:

I joined Dec 30 and already down 4 pounds.
What changed - logged my food, realized my work lunches were killing me, always make my own food now, and I stick to my calorie goal. Oh, and I also bought a kitchen scale and plan on buying a portable scale.
What hasn't changed - I still hit the gym 5 days a week like I have done the past 5 years.
I am testament that hitting the gym will not compensate for a terrible diet. It probably kept me from gaining insane amounts of weight but I was still not healthy.4 -
Thanks for the reply, I’m new to food logging my meals. I haven’t bought a scale yet, but I’m planning to soon. I have been making small changes in my diet and nutrition which have helped a great deal. I’ve been doing so so on sticking with my caloric intake, but I’m hoping to improve. It’s been a learning process, to say the least. Lol You’re def. right on the whole bad diet comment. I always went to the gym a couple times a week and wouldn’t lose much. After making certain changes, I’ve seen better results and hopefully will continue to do so. Good luck on your fitness journey!1

I used to joke that the only reason I went to the gym so often was so I could pig out on ice cream and cookies. I probably would have gained 100 more pounds over the years had it not been for the gym.2 -
It's not so much a tip as it is "the way" to lose weight. Log absolutely everything you eat as accurately as possible (food scale, don't eat out often, etc). Once you're logging accurately weight loss is simple. Pick a calorie goal, eat that for a few weeks. If you lose weight, continue on, if you do not, again make sure you are being extremely accurate in your logging, and if you are, reduce your calorie goal. That is literally the only thing you ever need to do in order to lose weight.7

Thanks for the info. I didn’t think the food logging was as important, I would always start and then stop after a while. Hopefully I’ll be able to stick with it on this app.1

I just got a chance to read this after reading a few others. This one was pretty spot on. Thanks again!0

A food scale is an awesome tool. I use to just grab the whole bag of chips because measuring a serving would be depressing (in my biased mind). Then I started weighing my food and all the sudden, I found most servings were satisfying.
Second thing, not logging something because I am ashamed I ate eat doesn’t mean it didn’t happen. Accept it, log it, and all the sudden I feel empowered. Not lying to yourself is an amazing feeling.3 -
Thanks for the responses, greatly appreciate the support and encouragement! Wishing you all success on your journeys!0

I started a serious weight loss program in March. Dropped about 15 pounds in a month doing lazy keto - just cutting out carbs. Then I hit a plateau.
I was talking to a friend of mine who is a nurse. She works with diabetic children and teenagers. She said to me "Are you logging your food?" "No." "Try that" she said.
I started logging and what do you know? Started losing weight again. A lot of people underestimate the calories they eat. I certainly did.

Welcome,
I think these two links are extremely helpful and can help you get the most out of MFP:
http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/1234699/logging-accurately-step-by-step-guide/p1
http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/1080242/a-guide-to-get-you-started-on-your-path-to-sexypants/p1
The first covers accurate logging and some of the tools in MFP to help you make things easier. The second discusses caloric needs and setting goals. These two posts completely changed my MFP experience and helped me be much more successful, so I hope they do the same for you.
~Best wishes on your journey

Hey yea I do both thankfully, in fact sometimes I eat too little bc of my schedule. I do CrossFit 4-5xs a week every week for a several months now as well as TWL. Thanks, all the best.0

Hey thanks for your response, very supportive & informative. I’ll be sure to check them out later today. Good luck on your journey!0

I would be glad to join you. I have recently lost 80 lbs and have about 30-40 to go.

Welcome aboard.
My best tip. Make it a sustainable lifestyle habit. Doing less forever is better than going full blast for awhile and then flaming out. Enjoy the journey.1 -
I have a Fitbit, I love it. Do any of your friends have one? I’m in a couple weekly and weekend challenges and it keeps me motivated. Just take it one day at a time. Soon you’ll see progress and won’t want to stop or lose it. Improve yourself every day! I eat loads of protein and it keeps me full. You’ve got this1

What are your macros? Be sure to keep progress pictures along the way, they are great little motivation boosts.1

I def. don’t doubt you in it. I was very intimidated when I first started CrossFit & TWL, but I’ve grown to absolutely love it. Now I can’t imagine not going as much I do. It’s helped me learn how to improve my body but also my nutrition. Good luck on your journey as well!0 -

Hey really, that’s awesome! Not many of my friends use it much anymore, so my willingness to do the Fitbit challenges pretty much died out. Lol thanks for your response and support, I greatly appreciate the words of encouragement! Wish you much success on your journey!
