I'd predominantly call them a carb source, but they do provide a decent amount of protein for a carb source.3

Yes.
Legumes are good sources of protein and also of carbohydrates. In most legumes, roughly 75% of their calories come from carbs and 25% from protein.6 -
They are high in carbs but also very high in fiber. They are an excellent source of protein for those who don’t eat animal products.7

I treat them like a carb. Different responses are likely due to a difference of perspective. For a vegan/vegetarian, legumes are probably one of the highest protein foods you can eat.1

This is one of my own puzzles! As a vegetarian beans and pulses make up a lot of my diet, I always thought they were protein but my nutrition is coming up high in carbs! How do I decrease my carb intake and up my protein intake!!1

Just my two cents as someone who follows a plant-based diet: vegans, vegetarians and the like are going to naturally eat more carbs as a result of getting the bulk of their nutrition from veggies and legumes. It’s hard to eat low carb or lower carb as a vegan or vegetarian. It’s possible - I’ve even heard of vegan versions of the Keto diet. That being said, you have to take into consideration the enormous amount of fiber plant-based eaters get, unless you’re eating a bunch of processed veg food like soy dogs, etc. so not all carbs are equal. If macros are important to you, you may need to do some research and determine an appropriate macro breakdown based on your goals and eating lifestyle.
As for me, I typically stick right around 50-55% carbs and follow a vegan diet 99.99999% of the time. On days where I feel really out of balance, I might supplement with a (vegan) protein shake to bring my protein up a bit to balance out my carbs.6 -

That sounds a little bit torturous- given that I was going to say- yes- people who do vegan/veggie life style eat a lot more carbs- b/c legumes are high in carbs.

Lots of foods are mixed.
Whether you see them as your protein source or carb source in a particular meal may depend on what else you are eating.2 -

Worry about increasing protein if it's not high enough, sure. Don't worry about carbs per se. There's nothing wrong with carbs (as long as you're not diabetic).

vegetarians and vegans and those who otherwise follow a more plant based diet typically have diets higher in carbohydrates...because most plants are primarily carbohydrates. Trying to low carb and be plant based is possible, but it would be extremely restrictive and boring as hell...5 -

Like I said, for vegans, they are a good source of protein. For anyone else, they are a good source of fiber. And methane.6 -

Since you are a vegetarian not a vegan: eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, egg-whites are a good source of protein.2
