Calorie Goal on App

I have a huge issue with the automatic calorie goal this app suggests. Mine is automatically set at 756kcal/day. This is NOT a healthy goal, misleading and can be dangerous. There is no way you can get your nutrition in at this level. Does anyone else have an issue with this? I think MyFitnessPal is irresponsible for promoting this type of dieting.

No matter how I mess with my stats and goals, I can't get my MFP to give me less than 1200 calories, which is supposed to be the minimum for women. You might want to contact MFP about this.

Agree with others - your goal should not be below 1200. Are you seeing something like Calories Remaining, after you've entered food into your diary?

Double check your height is in correct units and check your age.

If that is not the issue, I would recommend opening a Case with Customer Support on the MFP Help/FAQ pages...

The program auto calculates to a minimum of 1200 for a female, 1500 for a male, but the low limit for a manual set up is 100. You can change it manually under the "Goals" tab. Or, if you change either the amount that you want to lose per week or the activity level settings, and then change it back, it will recalculate for you. If you change it manually, it will stay at that setting until you change it again, but the auto setting will change as you lose weight and age, down to the 1200/1500 minimums.

Can you screen capture your setting page?

Mine doesn’t look anything like that. Is that under “goals” in the main menu? I’ve tried to look under that and edit my profile. Neither even resemble that page.

I’ve tried changing to percent... that doesn’t work either.

Did you adjust your protein, carbs, or fat? MFP will use those numbers to create your calorie goal. Carbs and protein are worth 4 calories per gram and fat 9 calories.

Under the "Nutrition Goals" header, tap the "Calorie and Macronutrient Goals" tab. Then tap "Calories".

That's on the website, not the app.

Right, if you want to go back to default, just change your activity level to something else, then change it back to active. It should go back to auto calc.

There was a glitch a while back where the safety net in MFPs calculations which didn't allow goals below 1200 for women and 1500 for men to be set automatically got turned off. This appears to be a resurgence of that.

Glad you got it figured out! Also I noticed from one of your screen captures you indicated wanting to lose about 20 lbs but chose a goal of 2 lbs/week. That's probably too aggressive, usually with less than 20 lbs to lose a goal of 0.5 lb/ week is recommended to help preserve lean body mass.

Great tip I’ll keep that in mind!

No, there are certain settings that allow you to have full control of the calorie and macro goals. That is a feature, not a bug. It's just that the overwhelming majority of users here don't know about, or how to use, the advanced settings so they assume that 1200 and 1500 limits of the "training wheels" settings are actual limits.

I never said you couldn't manually set it lower, just that MFP will never automatically give a goal lower. A while back though, people were signing up and getting 750 cal goals just by punching in their stats.

No, it isn't a glitch, or a resurgence of that.

If they're not, they should be, so I fail to see how figuring out a way around sane limits is a wanted feature that one ought to be proud to have discovered.

Some of your word choices leave me with the impression that your decision making could benefit from some training wheel guidance!
