I just got a Polar FT4 and so far I like it, but the calories that it says I burned is extremely high. I ran a little over 3 miles this morning (12 minute miles) and it said I burned 450 calories. I'm 5'7", 155 lbs, 27 years old, and female. It said my average heart rate is 159. We ran for a total of about 40 minutes, because it was a little over 3 miles. Does that seem really high?

My husband has a Garmen watch/GPS and it said he only burned 289 calories....while he was pushing the double jogging stroller with the kids in it (about 110 lbs total).

Possibly a little high but I always base my calculations on 10 calories per minute.
    (I use an FT4 though.)

40 minutes would be 400 cals and I'm just a couple of pounds lighter than you. So it might be completely accurate :O)

That sounds about right to me. I have the FT4 too, and on a treadmill for an hour I burn close to 500 at a walking pace(3.2). So I'd say you're pretty spot on :)

Your read sounds right to me. I have an FT4 as well and run similar runs and burn a similar amount.

I love my Polar FT4....Make sure your settings are correct on the HRM...height/weight/etc...I forgot to change mine, and the cals were a big difference with only a 5 pound variance.

You may really be exerting that much and don't normally realize it. I'd do the run again, and see if it comes up the same or close to it.

My calories actually come in way low on the Polar FT4. I can do zumba with a HR of 155 for 45 minutes and it only reads like 239 calories. at my weight i burn much more then that.

There is a formula you can use with your HR, weight, age and minutes working out, itll give you an accurate calorie burn

    (-20.4022 + 0.4472 x HR - 0.1263 x weight + 0.074 x age) / 4.184= calories burned

    Women use the following formula: Calories Burned = [(Age x 0.074) -- (Weight x 0.05741) + (Heart Rate x 0.4472) -- 20.4022] x Time / 4.184
