FASHIONISTAS ~ Using FASHION as motivation?

One thing I have noticed is that if I hightail it to my closet as soon as I start feeling the need to nosh (munch snacks) in the evenings, I can start trying on clothes and the next thing I know, I have lost the desire to munch. It makes me feel so happy! And then instead of gaining or not losing, I get a little more inspiration when something almost fits, or even if it fits but is still a little tight. The trouble always is remembering this technique when brain sends me mindlessly into the kitchen to stare into fridge or pantry.
Any other fashion loving people find this to be true?

shopping spree has always been in the back of my mind when I reach UGW.
Sounds like you have discovered a good method for tempting moments though, I never thought to do that, will have to give it a try4 -

Love that! I like to try on my SW pants to see how far I've come and then my small pants to see how close I'm getting to goal.0

I don't have a lot of clothing items (as I'm a poor student), but love to go on pinterest sometimes and find it to be a great motivator to see all kinds of beautiful clothing on beautiful people. It makes me excited to get to my goal weight and get really fit. Like 4legsRbetterthan2 I'm planning on a shopping spree when I get to by goal body5

Great idea! Maybe keep a picture of your closet or an outfit you'd like to get on your fridge for when you wander in there mindlessly.
Similarly, this is one of my responses to the many, "What keeps you motivated?" threads: being able to fit comfortably in every single item of clothing I own. Not having to worry about something not fitting or not looking right is a great freedom.6 -
Fashionista here- checking in. To be honest, one of my biggest motivation for losing weight along with a healthy heart was fashion. I think i have saved over 1000 fashion ideas spread across 20 Pinterest boards. If you really want motivation buy tank tops. I bought some in preparation for the summer season. Everytime i try one of them, I'm motived to do my ab workout. Unfortunately all my really dressy clothes are getting big on me. Some i've been able do some DIY reductions to make them fit better, for others I just can't make any changes and gave them to my mom. I've been hesitant about buying any fancy dresses yet, because my hips are getting smaller. I've just been buying casual and work summer wear, but I think i might just buy a small size sexy dress for more inspiration.7

Yes! Fashion was definitely a big motivation for me when I was losing weight.
I've reached my goal and I'm having a ball shopping and wearing things I could never wear when I was overweight/obese.
I'm taking classes to learn how to sew my own summer dresses and skirts soon to celebrate my 5th year of maintaining so I'm looking forward to that! I have so many ideas in my head that I can't buy off the rack.17 -
YUP!! I had a pair of pants, dresses, shirts that I kept because they didn't fit but I love!! Every time i was getting depress because the scale wasn't moving I try those on and see how they fit. They were fitting better and better so it meant i was losing inches and kept me going. Had a pair of pants that didn't go past my hips, then it did but couldn't button, then it button but still had a muffing top, and now not only do they fit but I had to leave them since they are to big. Love the way clothes fit!!4

There's a particular clothing shop in the mall that has lots of beautiful fitted dresses and I always day-dream as I walk by the mannequins in the window. I think I'll treat myself to a new dress when I reach my goal weight.5

Yes, fashionista here! One of my rewards to myself is buying a nice outfit, new boots, etc instead of going out to eat. Win win!3

Absolutely.
I went on a self imposed ban on all purchases until I reached XX weight. Now that I'm at that weight I don't need to buy anything. It is an incredible feeling to just grab clothes and leave the house. No stress about what's going to fit me today.
I still have 6 lbs to lose and several inches. I have two dresses that I want to wear to a wedding in April that are my motivation.3 -
Yes definitely! I cannot wait to reach my goal weight and go on a shopping spree. Being able to look nice in nearly everything is one of my motivators. I love and miss being able to be fashionable.6

I have the opposite problem, everything is loose but still only a few months old. It’s very depressing.1

There's no doubt that clothes hang and look better when we don't have unsightly lumps and bumps. I know it was huge motivation for me to drop dress sizes - I love that whatever I put on now looks fabulous3

I sew my clothes, and this year I'm taking part in a RTW (Ready To Wear) Fast. This means buying nothing to wear except underwear and shoes for a year. So the motivation to sew is strong, and there's great support from the sewing community.
When I put on extra pounds, I'm not excited to sew. My clothes are a great reason to lose weight, stay the course and not give up!!8 -
I try on last season's most fitted clothes often as a guide. My goals is to make sure they still fit or are looser.4

I find that when I am in a slump (emotionally) and wear one of my best outfits and feel extra stylish, it lifts my mood and keeps me from comfort eating.
Even today at work, I am not dressed particularly stylish as it is casual Friday but I am wearing figure-hugging jeans and a cropped sweatshirt (as in, 0% belly showing but more body con than a big baggy sweatshirt) and I think that helped me to steer clear of the donuts a sales rep brought in.
Fashion has been a huge motivator for me in weight loss and sometimes I think I'm a little too fashion-obsessed for my age (41) but I believe I'm making up for the twenty years I lost wearing only plus size styles.18 -
I am definitely motivated by the idea of being able to wear more styles. I stick a few different cuts to best flatter my current body--lots of stretchy fabrics, A-line/fit and flare, skirts and dresses only, no pants. I'm known for my style, and I enjoy how I dress, but I think at the end of this I will feel more comfortable in different styles. I look forward to being able to wear more body-conforming styles, maybe even pick up a few pairs of pants!5

Me too. My interpretation of 'fashion' isn't necessarily what's considered to be officially fashionable. I've always heard my own beat, but now that I don't feel like I need to hide under baggy layers, I'm having way more fun dressing. My tastes lean towards boho/vintage/old hippie clothing. I'm 59 - don't think there's an age limit, unless you want one.9 -

I get that. I'm not much of a fashionista really, I'm pretty casual, but I like to look nice and put together, even if it's a casual outfit. I find that when I'm bigger it's harder to be casual actually. When you're big and casual, you look kinda frumpy. When I'm slim and have fitted jeans and cute t-shirt, I can still look good, but when I'm big and wearing the same thing, I feel like I look like I'm not trying at all. It's weird how your perception of the clothing can change depending on the body it's on.12

I was finding timeless things I'd kept from 20 years ago, along with beautiful more recent things I now fit again.
Of course, I was also finding ghastly stuff that I decided life was too short and space was too much of a premium that I threw all the crap out, and all my fat clothes, and de-cluttered all my cupboards.

A while back a found these jeans that fit me nice and were on sale. I liked them so much I bought a second pair one size smaller. This week I retired the first pair and pulled out the smaller size out of the closet. I few other pants waiting for my future success.6

It feels great! At first I bagged things up. I didn’t trust myself to keep the weight off. And some of those things...like you say, were old! It really helped me though to set goals and see progress even when the loss slowed down. Currently, I’m up ten pounds and working hard to get that off. Yuk!

Yes! I'm definitely making up for lost time. I often think about when I was younger shopping with my friends. I usually had to sit on the sidelines or shop alone in the plus-size section which had *way less* options as they do today.
Now it's my time to shine!6 -
Never a fashionista but maybe one in the making soon. I have finally been losing weight consistently (almost 4 months). My son said to me "Why are all your clothes so big and boxy". I would never want anyone to see my bulges and didn't think that is a good look for me and would make me uncomfortable. He reminded me that previously when I have lost 50 lbs (more than once but gained back), no one noticed your weight loss cause you still wore the bigger clothes. So I have since tried on all my clothes, giving away bigger clothes to friends/charity. I am wearing closer fitting shirts, at first really uncomfortable in my skin, but now feeling much better. As soon as I put on a top that is now too big, I either wear it that day, wash, and then put in the away pile. I have two pair of pants hanging on the back door, one I need to lose maybe 10 lbs. to fit and the other maybe 15+. When I lose the next 7 lbs, will try them both on again.
This is what I used to do 35 years ago for years - I would buy a tank top, buy a button down shirt and wear the shirt open because it wouldn't close, purposely buy it smaller thinking that it will eventually fit. But the arms were usually too tight or after a washing, would become too tight. I did this for years and years never buying the right size. The next time I shop in will not be in the women's dept.6 -
When I was at 210, I rarely ever ever ever felt sexy in any clothes of mine. Now at 165 I try buying all sexy, exciting, flirty and fun clothing. Nope - I don’t really own any basics other than jeans/yoga pants! I think that always having a closet of fun, exciting clothes is motivation alone. It makes you feel good and sexy a lot of the time and not frumpy. It makes you wanna keep losing the weight since you appreciate your body more!7
