What's going on?

So I recently did a one week PSMF (high protein, low carb, low fat, low calorie) after gaining over 20 pounds while eating raw vegan. My protein was no more than 120 grams. Fats and carbs no more than 20 grams. I ate a lot of single packaged foods like frozen fish fillets, small frozen packaged veggies (no butter/sauce), low fat cheese sticks, sugar free jello cups, etc. End result, I gained 6 pounds in a week. On the other hand, I very recently have been going through major stress (ex boyfriend stole my car and my grandfather is dying). So I spent an entire following week binging through my emotions. I went through a jar of peanut butter one day. Another day, I ate deviled eggs and 3 sugar free dark chocolate bars and rotisserie chicken. Another day, I ate several hot dogs (no bun) and a package of cream cheese along with some other stuff I can't quite remember. Anyways, when I was extremely stressed, I craved tons of fatty salty food and kept eating all the fatty salty food in sight as well as buying more when I ran out. By the end of that week, I weighed myself to see what the "damage" was and noticed I lost over 10 pounds. Not only that but my size 1 jeans are getting loose. I'm very confused now.
Ps- I've decided to continue eating mainly fatty food. Not binging like when I was recently stressed but I've made fat a staple. Am still losing weight on a daily basis and see ab lining now. What's going on? And why did I gain weight on the protein sparing modified fast? Same with raw vegan. Yet not when I pigged out on fat. I'm just curious (and confused).

Well they were only a week long so I don’t think you can say for sure that one or the other was the reason for the weight loss. If you had continued one or the other for a longer period then you’d be able to make a more informed decision. It was probably mostly water weight fluctuations anyway.

Changes in scale weight can seem kind of random. Cortisol, other hormones related to menstrual cycle, the food in your gut, degree of carbohydrates being processed, exercise-related inflammation, and more have an impact on fluid retained at any given time. Six to ten pound swing related to menstrual cycle alone is not unusual. Some people find that severe calorie deficits (especially when already lean - size 1 jeans, e.g.) over-stress the body (yay, water retention).

You need more data to figure out your particular trends :) With regard to eating fat or not - you need fat to stay alive; fat is not the devil, and if you are not routinely eating more calories than you are burning in a day, it won't "make you fat."

An aside - if you are wearing size 1 pants and are losing weight (and aren't a short person to begin with), you might re-consider your food intake.

I wonder if you had really lost weight during that PSMF week but you just happened to weigh yourself at a water weight high...?

Then maybe you didn't eat as many calories as you thought. I mean, yes, that jar of peanut butter was probably 3000 calories... ok, I have no idea how you did it.

But it does sound like your binge was a result not only of your stress, but also of the severe restrictions of your previous diet. You went from raw vegan to eating a pack of hot dogs and package of cream cheese. Maybe start trying to find a happy medium?
