Bought food scale, need help regarding its usage.

Hello everyone I am 21 yrs old Male height- 170cm weight- 65.3 kg. I just bought a food scale and want help regarding its use. The post is gonna be long so there will be a TLDR at the end for those who don't wanna read the whole thing.


I am looking to add 5 more kgs but for the last 2-3 weeks was stuck at 65 kg mark, so I went and bought a food scale today. Now for the breakfast I eat oats. So my first problem is how you guys measure oats? I use 130 gm of water and boil it then add 40 gm oats to it, and after 5-6 min I add 130 gm milk to it, then I just boil it for some time. So when I use MFP app and input in my breakfast I input oats with milk and I choose the first option which comes, and in serving size I input 40 gm. Should I input the oats added only or should I input the serving size after the oats are cooked?


In lunch I tend to eat chicken with rice mixed with it, so I guess it's ok if I just input boiled chicken breast and then cooked rice as different parts in my lunch?


I add peanut butter in my banana shake and when I was searching for "banana shake with peanut butter" in MFP app I couldn't find satisfactory result, so should I input banana shake differently and peanut butter differently?

TLDR- looking to increase 5 kgs, 1st para contains query regarding use of scale for measuring oats, 2nd and 3rd para regarding how to use for when mixing different items.

    Add each ingredient separately in the Diary, preferably by weight.

    For peanut butter, and other items that you scoop out of containers, place the container on the scale, tare/zero the scale, scoop the desired amount of peanut butter out of the container until the scale displays the negative amount desired.

    My Diary is public and goes back 4+ years, you can browse it for examples of how to log every item individually.

    Here is an example of how I log my frozen fruit protein smoothie.

    Thanks for the feedback, so if I am cooking oats I should just input oats, milk and water differently in the diary right? But I usually try to boil the oats till not much liquid is left so will there be any difference after the oats is cooked?

    You don't need to log water in the Diary as an individual item. Water has zero Calories and very minimal minerals, mostly very low levels of sodium so don't bother.

    When you cook something, the water (zero Calories) boils away or is absorbed into the dry ingredients, such as the dry oats. Log the amount of milk you use (only some of the water in the milk boils away which does not affect the Calories), log the amount of dry oats you use. You are done.
