so I noticed on my food logs that I eat way too much sugar....I LOVE FRUIT and that's what I eat as snacks so I need to back off on the fruit but I have no clue what other snacks to replace fruit with... While I am at home my parents won't really let me choose the grocery list but I move into my house August 13th and can do my own grocery shopping...I am asking for ideas on healthy foods and easy recipes for when I am at college :)

  • I have the same sugar problem. It seems like sugar from fruit should be okay and not counted toward your sugar goal. You are supposed to eat 3-4 servings per day! That would go way over the quota. I have no idea what to do!

I think fruit sugar is ok, it is the white sugars that is something to stay away from. It would be good, though to eat veggies for snacks too though; good nutrients without the sugars

Sugar is sugar. It's all digested the same whether it's white sugar, brown sugar, pineapple, etc. (http://www.afic.org/What you should know about sugars.htm, http://www.nfb.org/Images/nfb/Publications/vodold/sugars.htm)

Just replace it with vegetables (not carrots).

Why not carrots??? I always thought carrots were healthy.

Carrots have the second highest amount of sugar (beets are first; http://www.fruitsandveggiesmatter.gov/month/carrot.html) as far as vegetables are concerned. They're not a big deal on their own, but if you're worried about sugars already, it's at least something to think about.

I posted this on another thread the other day, but here's a picture of a woman named Freelee, who eats basically nothing but fresh fruit (she says around 97%) doesn't restrict her calories and has lost quite a bit of weight in the process.

There's a whole website of people doing the same, who seem to be fine, at http://www.30bananasaday.com

I personally couldn't eat 97% of my calories in fruit and I don't know many people who could, but I'm just pointing it out to say, if you LOVE fruit, I wouldn't be too concerned about eating a couple pieces a day -- sugar or no.

For what it's worth, fruitarians have their own problems: http://www.goaskalice.com/2218.html

Alice! is a portal for Columbia University (http://health.columbia.edu/services/alice), just so it doesn't seem like I'm linking to some random website.
  • I could recommend but I think my snacks are more New Zealand style haha! I buy a brand of nut bars that have very little added so quite healthy. As well as that I also sometimes have carrot & celery sticks with a bit of hummus, sometimes a boiled egg, sometimes a piece of wholemeal toast with a low-cal spread like Marmite. Apparantly American's hate Marmite though as it's a savoury spread and also I've heard eggs aren't as nice over there? We have amazing eggs here!
  • thank you everyone, very helpful :) and thanks for the last link calibri!! that was very informative i didn't even know there was such thing as fruitarian!

With fruit you get fiber and vitamins. Sugar is not equal to fruit.

that's so cool you live in New Zealand! whats the brand of nut bars? is it only in over there? hummus w/ veggies sounds like a really good snack. I haven't had hummus in forever...gonna have to remember that when I go shopping!!! and the eggs here are tasty but supposedly have a heck lot of cholesterol in the yoke ? thanks so much for your input :)

Sure. I'm not promoting going to an all fruit diet. I'm just pointing out that at least one person who has doesn't appear to be drowning in her own fat or losing all her hair and so it is probably okay to eat a couple pieces of fruit for a snack.

To the OP, I recommend checking out Dr. Lustig's lecture "Sugar: The Bitter Truth" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM
