Have any of you noticed that your period became lighter and shorter with consistent exercise, weight loss, and healthy eating. To give you an idea, I used to use super plus tampons and needed to changed very often (every 2 hours). Now, I can use regular tampons and although I change it often throughout the day.. i could easily go almost all day without changing it at all.

I am hoping this is normal and just my bodies reaction to my healthier lifestyle. I know some of you will probably say "call your doctor, don't ask medical advice on here" but, if you are like me and don't have the money to drop on an appointment that may not be necessary , you will understand why I want to check with my fellow ladies first. I would like to see if any of you have noticed similar changes in your TOM.

Thanks in advance ladies :-)

Right now I'm on the Depo shot, so it's all wonky. But I have gone through times in my life when I wasn't on birth control that due to my weight and fitness I didn't get them for a very long time.

Talk to your doctor though, just to be sure.

*** sorry I said the one thing you didn't want to hear...

But our bodies can be sensitive to a lot of change.

I just had a baby and am breastfeeding so no periods for me, but I always had an irregular cycle that normalized when I got consistent exercise so it can impact it.

Mine has gotten lighter and shorter since I've lost weight.
  • When I started running I stopped getting my period, and I haven't had one for two and a half years. My doctor told me that it has to do with either excersising too much or not having enough body fat.

Yeah, mine has become slightly different and my cycle itself is shorter. But my sister said hers has gotten lighter and shorter with her weight loss. :)

Especially while you're dropping a lot of body fat, this is normal. Mine have actually become more regular since I have lost weight, not needing the progesterone any more. I'd say shorter and lighter is normal, and they will equalize when your weight stabilizes.

For the girl on Depo, that totally messed up my body and made it impossible for me to lose weight. Hope it doesn't do that to you.

  • Yes! I used to get TERRIBLE cramps, mood swings, and cravings - Within the last few months this has all gotten soo much better. Mine is also lighter.
I called my mom about this (lol) and she said it was a perfectly normal and healthy reaction to fitness :)

Yes, I would have to agree with you. My periods are definitely lighter and shorter...

    thank goodness!
  • OH thank god for the news that, for the most part, periods get lighter and shorter. I really need that to happen.

I've only been exercising on a daily basis for the past two weeks now, so I"m hoping to be caught up in that also. My periods, as a general rule, are heavy and long. Very heavy.

So I will be happy to let you know at the end of the month if mine was shorter and lighter or not!!

That could easily be the case if your heavy troublesome periods were caused by, or just worsened by body fat, which affects your hormone balance and a sedentary lifestyle which makes MANY female problems worse. (I have read that 80% of women can get significant relief from hot flashes by exercise!--but most would rather have a pill) If your body fat gets too low, however, or you are eating too little, you can make your periods disappear entirely--this would not be a normal, healthy thing. Just make sure your healthy and not going crazy--and if you feel good, my guess would be that you're healthy--and enjoy the benefits!

By the by, GOOD JOB! Keep it up.

Gained 15 lbs that I cannot lose. lol
    Been spotting for umm...9 months.
  • I was wondering if starting to live a healthier life affected periods too. I can't remember when mine was last month (I'm so bad at marking it on the calender or keeping track of it in any way) but I know that it's been a while and that I should have gotten mine already. Good to know that working out and eating better affects it! I hope it helps me on the first day of mine (usually have NO energy).

you are totally right on board with your body and why it's doing what it is doing
every hormonal issue relates to being over weight
    PCO--is totally related to weight
and the first thing any doctor would tell you to do is loose weight

    it can be regulated
    it can be shorted
    it can be decreased totally
and PMS can totally be eluded if you do loose weight and exercise

    however
you can be exercising and loosing too much weight too fast and it can really muck things up the wrong way to
    so
be sure you are eating right
    and
exercising but not enough to put your whole system outta wack

Mine have been out of whack my whole life...the only thing that regulated it was being on birth control pills. I absolutely hate being on the pill though (experienced WAY too many side effects!), and got off of it back in February. Had one normal period in march, when I was supposed to (according to the pill schedule, had I stayed on them), and then didn't have one until June. It's late again, but now I'm hoping it's because I've been eating much healthier, and have been exercising a lot.

Happened almost immediately! My period became more tolerable before I saw my first pound lost. It's been three and a half months since I got serious about healthy living, and my period is lighter, lasts fewer days, and my PMS symptoms are hardly noticable.

This is the third time I've been overweight and made a move to get fit, but I don't remember this happening the first two times. P.S. this time, I'm doing it for life.
