To work the abs or not work the abs, that is the question.

I've had over a 24 hour period of rest and this is my workout day. I really started working my abs on Tuesday and they are still pretty sore. Around my sides of the body the lower belly, when I cough it hurts. Pain is definitely better than yesterday, but should I work them today again or wait another day? Just a little heads up, this has been the first time in my 30 years of life my abs have ever been worked out too. Thanks

The abs are built to recover faster than most muscles, but they still need time. I'd ease into things by skipping this one, maybe doing this work every 48 hours. After you're more trained, you might recover faster.

Agree with AllanMisner, although I would say that if I never worked out when I was sore then I never would have made any progress - if it's very sore or you're in actual pain then skip it, but if it is just a little bit sore I would probably keep going (although everyone is different, obviously).

Soreness is relative to what the individual can handle. If the soreness is prohibitive to good movement or inhibits performance too much, definitely don't hit that same muscle again. Mild soreness without any negative impact to movement or performance is a different situation.

You don't need to hammer your abs into submission to train them. Also remember that especially if you're breathing and moving properly through other exercises, your abs are isometrically engaged as well.

So you've had 48 hours of rest, right? If so, you can do light workout.. which will probably reduce the soreness.

Which strength program are you following?
