So i have the horrible luck of having a nasty cold. Usually when I am sick I slam the OJ because it seems to make me better faster. However, 8 oz of OJ is 110 calories. How would u track that? Obviously Im going to be over or I wouldnt be able to eat anything! Help and suggestions please...

I don't understand how you would track it as anything other than it is?4

When I am sick I change my setting to maintenance because my body can use the extra calories to heal and a week or two off is not going to kill the other 50-51 weeks in the year.7
-
I guess my question would be: would you be a little more forgiving on the calories being a lot of it is oj or just not eat much...0

Put it in your diary. Anything you eat/drink that has calories should be tracked. You would probably do better to try and eat at maintenance while you're so sick, so the OJ could potentially fit your goal, or you could decide to take a short diet break and go back to calorie restriction when you feel better. All the best - get well soon5 -

I'd track it like you do anything other liquid--measure it in a cup and use an accurate entry in the database. When you're sick, worry about getting better, not about going over your calorie goal. It won't matter in the long run.
I take cold-eeze. They're lozenges meant to help shorten the duration and severity of colds. They have zinc and vitamin c. Whether they actually work or not, I think they help (go placebo effect!). You can buy them at any drug store or grocery store, at least in the US. They sugar-free ones, too.3 -
I went and got zicam to hopefully shorten the length of the cold. Hopefully it will work as well as cold eeze0

Don't buy into the orange juice industry propaganda. It's cheaper dollar-wise and calorie-wise to just take vitamin C. I take powdered vitamin C to bowel tolerance.8

You could always take some Emergen-C instead of drinking OJ if you want to save on calories.5
-
If you're drinking OJ, log it. As others have pointed out there are more calorie-efficient ways to ingest Vitamin C, I like the EmergenC packets and keep a box around if I start to feel a cold coming on or those around me are sick (like this time of year).2

I agree it would save calories to take a supplement instead of drinking the OJ, but the advantage of the juice is that fluids are especially important when sick, and every glass is 8 oz. fluids.3

What is your total daily calories allowance? I don't quite see how this 110 calorie item is going to stop you from being able to eat.1 -

The word "slam" suggests that she is consuming more than 8 ounces, at least to me. Several glasses of orange juice would make a huge dent in the amount of food I'd be able to eat in a day (and still meet my calorie goals).0 -
There are less calorie dense choices for taking in vitamin C
When I'm sick I generally eat a lot of green chile stew...it is relatively low calorie, comforting, hydrating, and the chiles and potatoes in the stew are packed with vitamin C. It's also spicy, so it makes you sweat...3 -
Jmo. I would eat oranges, drink calorie free beverages, and take a vitamin supplement like powdered vit C. The sugar in oj is nothing to sneeze at.3

Yeah, when I have a cold, i usually drink quite a bit of oj and it kicks the cold pretty quickly. And yes, im concerned about calories not sugar. Ill look into emergen c or something as a supplement! Thank you for the help!!1

I am a bit under the weather too (husband has the flu), I've been consuming a lot of oranges. One orange is around 70 calories and makes a great snack!4

Don't forget to replace the OJ with a similar amount of water or other fluid3 -
Take vitamin C0

I wouldn't worry about going over your calorie allowance for the duration of the cold. Your body is fighting against the illness, and your cold probably won't last more than two weeks. Try some chicken noodle soup, rest, drink plenty of fluids, and give yourself a break. This is just a blip on the screen.1
