Starting to Eat Healthy

Hi everbody,

So I am just starting this journey to eating healthy. Obviously I know what healthy foods are, I am just struggling with creating a shopping list of balanced healthy foods with variety. The main reason I struggle is because I really do not like to cook and have a hard time committing myself to the time it takes to prepare meals. I am also starting graduate school this fall and am in need of easy meals that I can take on the go.

Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks! :)

I make a lot of food ahead, so that I can grab things easily. I ALWAYS have fruit, veggies, 1% Cottage Cheese, eggs and yogurt in the house. I can whip up an omelet in minutes. In the freezer I have pre-cooked chicken breasts. Take what you like and figure out how you can make it FAST.
  • Since you are just starting out, don't just throw everything out and refresh right then. That leads to disaster and most of all failure. Start off by replacing ONE MEAL a day with something healthy. Then as your progress, slowly replace common foods you find yourself eating with a healthier alternative (white to wheat, fruit snacks to fruit, etc.). This way you aren't depriving yourself. Stay away from "empty calories" such a potato chips because they aren't helping anything but add to your midsection, leaving you bloated. Each week, change ONE THING in your lifestyle until it completely adds up to a full day of goodness! Give yourself one cheat day a week if you must! That way you won't crash and have something to look forward to during the week. Make a small
list at first because if you completely stock up, you won't eat all of it. Been there done that ;D

Good luck on this new lifestyle. Do not consider this a "diet"! Dieting is depriving, remember that. Healthy eating is a fantastic way to live!!!

80% healthy eating 20% exercise. I wouldn't recommend heavy exercising until you are in the habit of eating right. That way you won't freak out and empty the fridge with bad foods after a workout!
