Hi all. Does anyone manage to continue exercising while sick? This week I got a cold and mild asthma flare up. I take prednisone for the asthma--but that just raises my blood sugar. I don't have diabetes and I want to keep it that way. So I'm thinking exercise is more important that ever when on prednisone--even if I'm sick/tired? Please advise. Thanks!

Skipping a few days of exercise will not hurt you. Exercising while sick might hurt you. Your body needs time to rest and recover. We're going through an especially bad flu season right now, which makes me even less willing to risk possible complications from being sick.

You need to talk to your doctor about your specific medical concerns, but in the meantime, I would play it safe and not overexert yourself.

You won't get diabetes in a few days or even a few weeks. Hope you're feeling better soon.

IMO you should go by how you feel. If you are "really" sick, it's best to rest. However if you have what you describe as a cold and mild asthma flare up, you might do well to do some gentle exercise- taking a walk or doing some yoga-type exercises inside, whatever appeals to you that will keep you moving a little.

If you are able to and it doesn't make you feel worse, go ahead. I do gentle stuff like going for walks with my dog when I'm under the weather. But do everyone a favor and stay out of the gym if you're contagious. ;)
