Guys, I don't know what to do. I lost weight in the past with diet and exercise and went from 225 lbs to 150 when I was in my late teens/early 20s. Fell into bad habits and now I'm all the way up to around 250 at 31. I'm considering weight loss surgery.

250 is not completely out of control, you've done it before, you know you can do it. I don't think weight loss surgery would be needed. Too many negatives to having it done. Start tracking, move more, and start losing. You know what to do. There's tons of support here. At worst there are medically supervised weight loss centers to help you if you want. Insurance usually covers it. Then you can transition to tracking and doing it on your own. Do what you need to do but I would consider weight loss surgery a last resort. I was 255 when I started this time, gained for a bunch of reason mashed together, down to 171 now, took a break for 9 months in between. goal of 155-160.0

You don’t need surgery.
Calculate a moderate calorie deficit on MFP. Start a food diary. That’s right, a food diary. I know you don’t want to, but if you really want to lose, it works.
I kept track with pen and paper. I thought the computer was a needless complication. Get a food scale. Crunch numbers and aim to hit your calorie number. If you eat too much, just keep tracking. You will soon find that to hit your number you need some kind of plan each week.
Give yourself plenty of time to settle into the process. Probably 6-8 weeks. Spend some time thinking about how you will deal with the time it will take to get to your goal. And how you will cope when discouraged.
A calorie deficit supported by tracking, given sufficient time, will work. Really.0 -
I understand you. I had just committed to spending $20/month on some online weight loss program that was supposed to help, but the next day cancelled it because I realized I had used this in the past and it worked. I would just be throwing money away when I have this for free!! I know you're feeling that the amount of weight you gain calls for drastic measures, but before you call for a bypass consult, why not really give this a try for 6 months? At the end of that time you might feel differently, and if you don't at least you've lost a little more weight which makes it safer for surgery......0

I started at 248, and am now almost 220, and goung strong averaging a pound a week. It's doable, without really upending your life.1
