How do I work out my calorie intake for the day?

Go to the goals tab, click "guided setup," answer the questions you're asked, and MFP will tell you.
Pro tips:
Don't be overly aggressive with your pounds per week goal (assuming you're trying to lose). Don't choose 2 lbs a week unless you're obese; if you're trying to lose "vanity weight" choose a half pound per week.
MFP doesn't take your planned exercise into account calculating your calorie goal. You're expected to log your exercise and consume additional calories to make up for what you burn in intentional exercise, although depending on where you're getting your exercise calorie estimates from, you may want to only eat back a portion of those calories, in case of overestimates.3 -
