Treadmill in basement or garage?

I am looking for the right place to keep my treadmill and am looking into our basement vs garage.
Our basement is old (stacked stone walls) and a little damp and musty - air quality is probably not the best.
Our garage is unattached to the house and not heated - I will be using the treadmill during winter months.
Any pro's or con's on either side of the basement vs garage?

I would say the garage if It was my choice, because of the air quality in the basement and you would get warm by running on it anyways0

I need a view, so I say garage too0

Honestly? I wouldn't put it in either. It would very much be "Out of Sight, Out of Mind" especially if the weather and climate isn't good in the location you put it.
Our treadmill is in our bedroom. We see it first thing when we wake up and when we're going to bed. Hard to avoid the workouts when its in your face.0 -
I say put it in the living room.... where you are always reminded to use it.... haha. My plan is to put mine in the basement but my basement is semi finished with cable and a family room down there so its a nice place that is temp controlled....0

Agree, Not basement with bad air! Mines in my basement and it's really boring and no outside light I look straight ahead at my deep freezer, doesn't make my work out anything to look forward to!0

Neither - if you 'hide' it in the garage or basement, you will never use it. Put it in your bedroom or living room... and use it!0

That is a good point, but a lot of studies show that keeping things in the bedroom (like a TV, work laptop, etc) is bad for intimacy and sleep quality as well. My bedroom is for sleep and sex. Nothing more!
OP: do you have an office or den area you could use? I'd recommend that1 -
Garage would be my choice.
1. Possibility of mold in the basement can lead to serious respiratory issues
2. Lots of people jog outside all year round. So why not use the treadmill outside? May take a little exrta on your part in the cold winter months, But hey, if you can do it....... (Hardcore!!, especially if you live in a northern climate like I do)
Good luck!0 -
mine is in my garage and I have used it religiously since I started in April, but I can see how it may be hard to get outdoors during the cold months.
That being said, stay away from the bad air in the basement. You will be opening yourself up to other potentially risky health issues.0 -
I have a bowflex that i had in another room for years never touched it a few months a go i brought it into the living room and now we use it i also bought an elliptical and it is in there too. I could care less that it is an eye sore better it then me.0

It could really go either way. If you've done your running before outside during the winter months and it didn't bother you because of your body heat, you could put it in the garage... it'd kinda be the same and you could put those same clothes on!
If you haven't run outside during the winter months... or run anywhere that it's been cold, and don't even like the cold, then the best thing is the basement. You can take care of the dampness with a dehumidifier and as for the musty smell... I'm sure there's something that can take care of it. Maybe go to a home depot and ask someone or even look it up on google. There's air purifiers and things. I'm just throwing all this out there and don't know if it can help with the air quality. All I know is that my mom had her exercise equipment in the basement and ran a dehumidifier and that took care of the dampness.
Good luck!0 -
Lots of good insight here - keep it coming!0

Does anyone have any thoughts on the cold temps of winter and how it may affect the treadmill? I live in the NE and don't want to break my treadmill running on a 10 degree day.0

I vote for living room. That is where mine will go when I get it.0

This is exactly what I wanted to post regarding. We have an elliptical that we keep in an upstairs part of our house that we close off and do not heat in the winter. Enough heat leaks in from other areas that it's not cold enough to freeze water but it IS chilly. If I want to use the elliptical, I have to open up the room and allow it to warm up for at least 4 hours, ideally 6 or so, before the electroncs will work. I would be willing to bet you will find the same problem with your treadmill and unless you have some way to heat that garage, you will not be able to turn the treadmill on and run when it's 40 degrees or less.
I also understand that extremes of temperature are very hard on the electronics, as are the wide swings in humidity in a structure like an unheated, unattached garage. Our elliptical is top of the line and does not have a ton of miles on it, but we are already having trouble w/the various programs not running correctly, etc., and it looks like we may have to replace some electronic parts. This will not be cheap either. I am attributing this to the the fact that we do keep this in a place that is cold in the winter and hot in the summer.
Long story short, from my experience, I would say if you are going to own a treadmill or similar equipment (as opposed to going to a gym), make sure you have an indoor temperature controlled place for it, or you will likely have a lot of trouble.0 -
I have allergies so they basement for me was not a good thing but if you feel motivated to use it in the garage the air quality is better. Also, you can always layer in the garage, then take off as needed. Also, you can burn more calories when you body trying stay warm. I personally would love b/c I am usually hot!!0
