Anyone follow the Dash diet. I heard its good for preventing strokes and heart disease. My boyfriend of a few years had a tia stroke and is in rehab and expected to recover.. But no one is talking to him about diet but put him on high blood pressure meds.. High bp is his only real risk factor he can control.. He is 60.. Can't change that.. But doesn't smoke or drink.. He is 6 3 210 pounds so maybe could lose a bit.. He does carry most of his weight in his gut. I looked up dash diet and it seems reasonable for everyone but only 6 oz of protein a day seems low.. Our current diet wasn't horrible but did include too much take out. I have lost 4 lbs by cutting it out. They do seem to be feeding him in smaller portions he is used to and something's seem like its restricted diet but other things not.. He will be under a Dr's care so sure they will discuss diet too along with medication..

I think any diet that seems too restrictive, will create a rebound effect. Even diets that seem reasonable, will backfire, if they make you feel restricted. I think the take home message with this diet is to cook and eat more at home, and that naturally reduces both salt and portions. Why they just can't say that, I don't know.

Thanks. He is on 3 meds.. I just would think someone would give advice on diet.. He is a grown man so I am gonna try not to sweat it.. He doesn't have a horrible diet anyways especially since we been cutting fast food.

I would try the DASH diet. (It was recommended by a doctor to someone I know.) I would also consider asking the doctor(s), if you haven't, for diet advice and/or a referral to a registered dietician.

He goes to a new doc next month so hopefully he will ask them more about diet suggestions.

If he’s just had a TIA and has hypertension the priority will be to manage the hypertension effectively with medication first.

The medications will be titrated to keep his BP in a safer range.

DASH diet has been proven to help reduce BP for some people. It will not replace medication for every one though, especially in patients who have already had a vascular event.

There is plenty of info about DASH diet readily available. It’s also reasonable to ask the doctors specifically about dietary changes to help manage you husband’s BP.

Keep in mind, dietary management is not enough for many types of management but it can be an adjunct to the many types of antihypertensive medications we are lucky enough to have available.
