If you are new to posting on this thread, or if you are new to cycling, We welcome you! If you are returning from a previous thread, We welcome you, too.

This thread is for anyone who rides a bicycle ... or unicycle, tricycle, tandem, etc.

Do you bike to work? Do you pull your children to the park? So you ride weekends? Do you spin, at home or the gym? Do you race crits, ironman, or centuries? Or, are you just starting out and remembering how much fun you had biking when you were a kid? However you choose to push your pedal, you are welcome on this thread.

There's no set challenge across participants - this is a mixed-ability / mixed-experience / everyone welcome group. Just pick your own target that you want to achieve this month, post that when you join the thread, and post updates throughout the month as you're working towards your target.

Let's get going in February!!

@Machka9 - thanks for keeping this thread going.

Slow start to the cycling month for me, just 59 virtual miles so far. Weather is grim and I've been busy refurbishing a house so training has taken a bit of a back seat. Hopefully this is the last busy week and I can start building into Spring.

I've logged about 50 miles on my mountain bike this year. I wish it was twice that but I have been working a ton of overtime this year.

Sunday -- As planned, we rode 100 km (101.57 km) today. This was a training ride as we ramp up to some bigger events in the coming months.

The route climbed to the 53 km point, and then more or less descended on the way back, although there are still a few hills that catch your attention on the way back.

In addition to the climbing, we were into a headwind for the first 53 km, with gusts up to 40 km/h. So we were working all the way out.

My legs usually settle in and "warm up" somewhere between 50 km and 75 km, but not on today's ride ... they never felt like they truly relaxed.

But the scenery was lovely and aside from that headwind, the weather wasn't bad.

    Distance: 101.57 km
    Elevation: 853 m
    Moving Time: 5: 50 :21
    Elapsed Time: 6:45:59
    Speed: Avg: 17.4 km/h | Max: 49.3km/h

Count me in. I will be on a stationary bike. Too much snow where I live right now for cycling. I have been biking to work for the last 10 years when the weather allows. I’m not hardcore. I don’t do rain or winds over 23 km. Takes me 50 mins to get to work by bike normally. My goal will be 50 km or 30 miles at three times per week. I am planning to mix in cross country skiing. The conditions are really good for that sport right now.

BNB 200K - Hot Hot Hot

We decided to do our first 200 kilometre Audax cycling event, since the one we did in Canada in June, on mainland Australia in Victoria this weekend. As some of you know, my cycling club is Audax Australia, and Audax cycling or Randonneuring is timed ultradistance cycling. Some of our events are a bit shorter 50 km or 100 km ... those are often warm-up events early in the season, or winter events later in the season. But then the bigger events start with the 200 km distance, and go up from there.

This particular event is called a 200K but that's a minimum designation. They can be a bit longer than that, and this one was 215 kilometres. But whatever the distance, it still has to be completed in 13 hours and 30 minutes.

We've cycled some of the roads included on this event before, so we had some idea what to expect, but we've done it under cooler conditions. This ended up being a very hot ride!! Our on-bike thermometres were recording over 40C out there on the road in the sun and the recorded high (always recorded in the shade) was 33C. Fortunately, the clouds did gather toward the end of the day, and the last 50 kilometres were somewhat cooler ... with a threatening storm and a decent tailwind!

There were so many birds ... living in Tasmania, I miss the melodic magpies of the mainland. And there was one large kangaroo.

And now I look like Australia ... I blend right in! I'm very reddish brown like the Australian soil.

    Distance: 215.47 km
    Elevation: 1,484 m
    Moving Time: 10:55:56
    Elapsed Time:12:34:18
    Speed: Avg: 19.7 km/h | Max: 49.7 km/h

My husband and I had a good week of cycling!!

Last Sunday we cycled a 200 km randonnee (215.5 km!!)

Then between Tuesday and today we cycled the Great Victorian Rail Trail:
    https://www.greatvictorianrailtrail.com.au/

We did a bit extra on the Wednesday so all up, we cycled 312.4 on that cycling tour.

In total: 527.9 km in a week!!

I'll probably do a bit of a write-up about the tour in coming days ... with photos!!

Poor cycling week with only two indoor training sessions - now 201 miles for the month.

One ride was a two finger salute to Old Father Time.... ;)
Marked my 58th birthday by setting a new PR for an indoor 25 mile / 40 km.

Any experienced cyclists care to give their opinion on this workout routine?

Aim is to improve my hill climbing and thinking of adding it to my routine once a week to prepare myself for the Spring transition from indoor training to outdoor riding when the current cold snap ends.

    One hour workout:
5 min warmup (up to zone 3)

Then into the interval part, 2.5 minute intervals of....

Seated climb, zone 4, heavy resistance, low cadence.
Seated flat, recovery to zone 3, moderate resistance, good cadence.
Standing climb, zone 4 pushing into zone 5 towards the end of the segment, very heavy resistance.
Seated flat, recovery to zone 3.

    Repeat interval sequence five times.

    5 min cool-down to zone 2.

It's hard to give feedback without context. What has your riding been like up until this point?

You must be way ahead of the season if you're recovering in zone 3. Recovery for me is always 60% (even if I'm doing 3 x 20 @ 95% FTP, I *still* give my body a true recovery).

You essentially have 10 minutes of climbing per sequence. And after each sequence you don't take zone 2 or zone 1 recovery, am I right? Are you measuring by heart rate or power?

    Personally, it's a workout I'd never do. But I can't say it's wrong for you/your goals.

    @goatg

I rode 5,000 road miles last year including a few Audax events and although I switched to indoor training in December I didn't detrain at all (usually I switch focus to strength training in the winter).
In fact I set a new PR for my one hour FTP test in December which encouraged me to stay near my peak rather than do my traditional Spring fitness build up. This is my first year retired and I want it to be a great cycling year!

Last night I had to just use RPE for my zones as all the Wattbikes were in use but normally I use power indoors and HR outdoors. But I have done Z3 recovery quite a few times so my RPE is well dialled in.
It's a protocol to mimic more accurately outdoor rides when you are going for a high average speed, high intensity for a hill or breakaway but then drop to a fast pace not a slow recovery pace. It's not a base building approach but more fine tuning to an already high fitness level.

At other times I do the more usual Z2 recovery - long duration intervals for example.
