No, i always burn at most 622 calories at the gym and I eat at least 550 of those. I have lost all of my weight from that. If you don't eat your exercise calories you might as well call your metabolism the turtle system because it is going to be so slow. You have to keep your body energized throughout the day so it can function and that is what helps you lose the weight!:glasses:0

Hi
I don't get it
With as much as they are working out...I can't understand how the contestant on the biggest loser don't pass out!
Plus it just seems unhealthy and that they are being set up to gain the weight back when they leave
I admit, I'm addicted to watching the show, but a few things don't sit well with me
I don't think anyone/anytime should only consume 1200 cals, especially if you work out
When I started here I ate 1490 cals w/ out working out
Once I started working out, I bumped my cals up even more....
Just my .020 -
i saw that too and was glad to hear it. i eat my excercise calories and seem to be doing ok. what i am worried about is portion size. i need to buy a scale because right now i am eyeballing how much meat i am cooking. i am so scared that i am going over my calories because of this! :indifferent:0

I enjoy the show too. But I think it is an injustice to not have a disclaimer before weigh ins saying these results are not typical and they are medicaly monitored. A lot of people think they should be able to do the same. Also, its so mean they have to weigh in spandex and no shirts. geeze.0 -

Totally agree with you! I love the show, but I think it's all about the ratings, NOT about actually changing those peoples lives. I read an article about all the past winners and runners up...and while they've kept the weight off....they ALL averaged about a 30-40 pound weight gain. Which when you loose over 100 pounds isn't too bad....but some of them only lost 90 pounds...that's almost 1/2 the weight they gained back. I, too, don't know how they workout that long. I worked out for a little over an hour yesturday and I had spaggheti legs and was exahusted the rest of the day! Plus I think they're giving the impression to viewers that if you just workout until you drop that you're going to loose mass amounts of weight. I think they should put more emphasis on how they are helping the BL's change their eating habits. (Which is why I'm a bigger fan of Discovery channels "The National Body Challenge") :flowerforyou:0 -

there is a disclaimer it says it after the show0 -
OMG YES!
Am I the only other person bothered by the outfits that have to wear to weigh in...especially the older/more mature ladies...seems disrespectful
I think the shorts they were a fitted t-shirt would be a better choice, no??

They can go on such calorie restricted diets, in my understanding for two reasons:
they are very overweight, and have body fat to draw their energy from (they're literally eating themselves) A while ago, songbyrdsweet posted a technique for determining a healthy calorie deficit that used a formula that involved your body fat percentage (sorry. . .I don't remember how it worked, but long story short, more body fat = higher safe calorie deficit)
and
they are medically supervised 24/7. . .
But, I still think it's an irresponsible level of weight loss. . .and it's evidenced by the fact that they all seem to go "crazy". . .hyper-emotional, for example. This is partly due to the fact that they've self-medicated their emotions with food for so long and partly due to the fact that they're delirious from hunger/exercise exhaustion.
Still, despite all my problems. . .I can't stop watching. Although, I DVR it so that I can fast forward through all the in-show commercials for extra gum, subway, oatmeal. . .etc. . .that drive me up the wall. Up the wall.0 -

i dont see why the women cant wear t-shirts either. wearing those sports bras and spandex is humiliating! :noway:0 -
Although I love the show, I, too, have thought they need to focus more on what the contestants really eat. There's no way that the son, at 18 years old and over 300# eats 1200 calories a day! I'm 5' 1", and I don't eat only 1200 cals a day!:grumble: :noway: Thanks for bringing it up!:flowerforyou:0

I love the show but agree with everyone's concerns here. I actually DVR it and watch it on Wednesday mornings while I walk/jog/run on my treadmill. It makes me keep going. Oh...they make the guys take their shirts off to weigh! That's mean. I'm embarrassed to be in my yoga pants and sports bras in front of my own boyfriend, let alone the WORLD!0 -

Especially since, they're not actually weighing in. . .that "scale" is actually a prop. They've done their weigh-ins with the Doctors earlier in the day (but don't know the results).
Also, those sports bras aren't lined, and the whole modesty-lack just kind of pisses me off . . .for the men and the women both. I think it's mostly for visual, so you can really see the bodies changing as the weight is lost.0 -

I have been sucked into some tight tank tops in my day... but that would be WAY better then an unsupportive, unlined, bra (I hope they actually have better ones to work out in).
As for the guys, I would assume it would be a big deal to them too.
As my dad says, "Really, is a t-shirt going to make THAT big a difference?" (Which I guess if it's down to a few tenths between people...yes.) I feel bad for em, they have more nerve then me for sure!0 -
I tried not eating my exercise calories and after about a week of doing this, my workouts suffered big time. I was tired, miserable, and *****y.0

the ads for subway and the gum etc are pretty over the top but these stretch mark ads on this site leave alot to be desired....I think the show is getting away from itself and going for ratings and drama...Jillian...love her..but she is playing more to the camera than before and getting a bit of drama queen....oh well0

American's love Drama- its why reality tv is so huge and has great ratings0 -
Well dang it.... I can be b****y all the time if it means I get a paid for it!
Ask my brothers they know!0 -
Well wait, who said that they only eat 1200 calories on the biggest loser? I've never heard them say that in the show, in fact I think bob was telling them that they needed to eat MORE becuase if he didn't it would put him into starvation mode. Maybe I got it all wrong IDK. :huh:0
-
Yeah, I'm really glad I watched it last night and heard him tell the guy about increasing his calorie intake becuase I am concerned about that also.
I think I need to bump up my calorie intake to start seeing a consitant weight loss.:huh:0 -
There are a million different methods and opinions on how to lose weight. In reality you need to find what works for you and stick to it. As for me, I never eat my exercise calories in weight loss mode, only when I am trying to maintain or gain weight.
As for the show, the people there do need to eat more because they are working out 6-7 hours a day and probably burning 6-8K calories. I don't care how much fat you have, at their level of fitness they would not last a week without fueling up. Their bodies are in a such a state of disrepair that they may just quit working.
The average person(fat or fit) who spends less than 90 minutes total in the gym is probably not creating that much of a deficit to be concerned, especially to the level some people are here. In fact I could argue that the amount of anxiety you get trying to eat just the right amount of everything to hit a specific target everyday is worse than being a little over or even a lot under.
I average 1600-2000 a day, burn about 700 average, last night was my long night on cardio so says the HRM I left 1515 calories in the gym. Ate about 200 of them when I got home, mostly protien and carbs...0 -
I agree too- I've known people who need to lose weight, never attempted it before, saw BL and assumed they could lose 20 lbs in less than a month...they try, do what they are supposed to be doing, lose 1-2 lbs a week, get frustrated and quit.
What is the show really teaching overweight Americans?
The show is motivating and inspiring, but does it REALLY change people's lives? I know one of the first season winners had gained almost everything back. Another contestant was quoted as being out of control again, becuase its NOT reality- the show does not teach you how to deal when there's nothing in the fridge, the kids are sick, and the dog is barking...that's real life.
There's no way in the world a person can work out that much and still live a NORMAL average lifestyle.
Very few have the luxury of a full gym, a trainer and all the free time to do nothing but workout.
but oh! we can dream...0 -
I also watch the show. I was not aware that they ate only 1200 calories. I thought each one of them had a specific calorie requirement, adjusted to their personal needs.
I feel they do talk about the reason they are overweight, why they eat, what they are hiding from. Jillian is always trying to get them to the point where they realize what needs to change emotionally. And I think Bob does too, just look at how he freaked at Joelle. (that was my favorite part) I thought Bob was going to pop a vein in his forhead.0 -

actually there are not a million ways...there seems to be one true way and that is to eat proper and get exercise....but here once again is someone with little time telling others they never eat their exercise calories in weight loss mode...this despite ALL the overwhelming testimony, etc....Bottom line...I say eat the exercise them...the site says eat the exercise calories...newcomers say they dont eat them...I am going with the site on this one ( and with trainer Bob)0 -
And here, once again, is someone assuming that since I joined a month ago that I just started the whole working out and eating right thing a month ago. Overwhelming testimony? Anecdotal at best. For every study out there that says you have to eat X, there is a study that says eat Y, with just as compelling evidence.
The only bottom line is that there is no "one true way". I have posted my own experiences in which I lost just over 100 pounds while gaining fitness and kept that off for well over a year. If you do not like the ideas then don't use them. But to say that there is only one way to do something is just false.0 -

Totally agree with you!!! I think that was one good thing they did this season...sending 1/2 the people home. Because the numbers they were putting out were NORMAL. I think it finally gave people a home an idea of how much weight you could reasonably lose in a month, when you don't have 8 hours a day to dedicate to the gym. (Course Sione (Blue team guy) had crazy numbers when he got back! lol)0 -

I was wondering the same thing. I never heard them say 1200 calories on the show before either. And yes Bob did say that.0
