Hello,
For my SlimFast diet I will be replacing 2 meals a day with 2 shakes, eating only fruit or SlimFast snacks in between and one 600kcal meal a day..
Need to exercise as much as I can and drink at least 2 litres of water.
I am currently drinking the strawberry flavoured shakes which I actually really enjoy, I am yet to try the chocolate and cafe latte flavours.
I don't have any of the SlimFast snacks yet as couldn't find any in the shop I got the shakes from but I'm going to be getting some, at the moment I'm just eating fruit for snack times.2 -
I tried it once, years ago. I only lasted a couple of weeks. The shakes don't really taste that great and I prefer to have actual food instead of just drinking my calories. Honestly, you'd be better off just using MFP to track your calories and eating foods you actually like that fit your calorie goal. And, unless you have a lot (over 100 lbs) to lose you probably won't be able to safely lose 35-40 lbs in 3 months no matter what "diet" you try. It's better to aim for .5 to 2 lbs per week to make sure you are getting enough nutrients and losing fat instead of muscle.14

Tried it years ago, lost a few pounds in a short space of time, gained weight back as soon as I stopped buying the things, because like a lot of people I just went back to eating the way I was before, learned nothing.
Now I eat real food, count calories and lose weight in a way that I would feel happy eating for the rest of my life. Lost 35lbs last year, maintained for a while and re-started a deficit after Christmas to get on with losing the rest for good.

^^^ solid advice^^^ Slim Fast, if successful is a short term solution at best. Log your food, get your portions under control, exercise ... it will come off. My daughter has tried Slim Fast multiple times, and always gains the weight back after she stops.7

I think the challenge you're going to have is that 3+ pounds a week isn't going to be a safe or sustainable rate of loss. How quickly you CAN lose weight depends on how much you have to lose. Unless you're trying to lose over 100 pounds, you're not going to be able to safely lose that much. Additionally, the rate at which you can lose decreases as you lose weight, so even if you're starting with 100+ pounds to lose, you can't keep losing that quickly the whole time.
Use this as a guide:
If you have 75+ lbs to lose, you can probably lose about 2 lb per week
If you have between 40 - 75 lbs to lose, you can probably lose about 1.5 lb per week
If you have between 25-40 lbs to lose, you can probably lose about 1 lb per week
If you have between 15-25 lbs to lose, you can probably lose about 1 -.50 lb per week
If you have less than 15 lbs to lose, you can probably lose about 0.5 lbs per week8 -
With only 40 lbs to lose, you should only be expecting to lose 1-1.5 bs per week.
Also I'd suggest logging your food and making sure you're eating the right calories by following that plan. I don't know how many calories the shakes have.
Just as something to think about, the problem with any diet like that is what are you going to do when the diet is over? Many people who lose weight by doing something temporary succeed in losing the weight, but then fail in maintenance, because the only way they know how to control calories is follow a temporary program.
I do occasionally grab a bottled shake when I'm short on time, but I don't find them very filling and I'd get so sick of them drinking 2 a day. I wish you success, but just know if you struggle on this plan, it's certainly not necessary to lose weight that way. Good luck!6 -
I find Slimfast shakes to be a good substitute for the *occasional meal rather than as a full-time diet plan. I prefer making my own with the Chocolate flavored mix over the pre-mixed.3

Try it and see if it works for you! If it's sustainable in the long run....GREAT! If not, try something else! There is no one solution for everyone and if you're new then over time you'll find what works for you!
Personally, I would quickly get bored of the same thing every day, but that's just me.
My advice would be give it a couple weeks, but place your focus on coming up with a wide variety of Balanced/Healthy meals for your dinner. Teach yourself about food quality which will open up new doors in the long run!
That being said, if you look at the "fine print" of any of these mainstream "diets", they'll say something like "Results Not Typical and are not exclusive of a regular activity/fitness program". So keep that in mind and add in some kind of activity every day.
Don't concern yourself so much with the numbers, but see where you're at in a month...or two months, and keep going from there. If you don't like it....you can always go on and try something else!
The sky's the limit! Good Luck!5 -

I did SlimFast many years ago, and did lose weight. BUT I gained it all back because I didn't learn about my eating habits.
Perhaps "step down" from Slim Fast. Replace breakfast & lunch initially. Then just breakfast. Then eat 3 meals (and snacks) while losing. This will help you learn about portion sizes for all foods.....not just diet ones.5 -
I used Slimfast before my wedding 3 years ago to budge some extra pounds and it worked for me.
Currently doing Slimfast shakes 2x a day and I log everything with MFP. I use Kefir and some berries in my morning smoothie, and mix things up. Some instant coffee powder with the vanilla shake and some ice is yummy for lunch. For snacks I’ll have fruit or a hard boiled egg/pickled egg and crackers. (Count everything! The barcode scanning feature in MFP is great tool)
Good luck!1 -

So what happens when you go back to eating regular food?2

when I was a teenager, I was starving and it didnt last, its not sustainable long term. then i just drank the shakes for breakfast because I liked them and i wasnt a breakfast eater. never did lose weight on it.0

Slim Fast was a quick way to get low blood sugar for me. Meal replacements work for some people because they don't have to do any cooking, planning, or calorie counting. Personally, I'd rather eat real food but an occasional protein bar is helpful. I would never do Slim Fast again but maybe it will work for you.1

The only thing the SlimFast diet is doing to cause you to lose weight is to put you into a calorie deficit, which you can do without spending money on SlimFast products. I don't think the nutritional profile is that terrible, it would certainly be an okay option if you really needed something and didn't have time for a meal on occasion. But 180 calories for breakfast and 180 calories for lunch...even with snacks I would be a danger to those around me out of sheer hunger.3 -
I did it a few years ago and only lasted about 4 weeks on it or so.
Any weight I lost on it just came back on with more than what I had lost on top. I learned nothing about eating properly while on it. I had no idea how to eat health or portion control or anything like that. I've now lost 1 stone 1 lb by eating properly, logging my foods and exercising.
The shakes and things are nice but it isn't really sustainable. If it works for you though, then that's fine.0 -

In Jan 2008 I started the Slim~Fast Optima program and did great! I lost 82# between then and Sept of that same year. Then they started making some really radical changes. Less food..Less help from the ONE dietician they had left (had 3 or 4 before that). You can use parts of their plan without even using their products. They gave many, many food choices and recipes, other than their products back then, and I think they still do. I used to be an ambassador for SF, but after all the changes I dropped it all. I kept what I had learned and was able to keep the weight all off until I lost my mom & brother just months apart in 2014 & 2015. Now I'm back using those same tools and doing just fine. I don't rely on SF products, but do use Pure Protein bars and shakes occasionally. I still use my old system of breakfast 200 cal, snack up to 100 cal, lunch 400 cal, snack, supper 500 or a few more cal. Snack.Best wishes to you on your journey.1

Hi, I lost 28lbs on the Slimfast diet last year community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10494696/slimfast-diet/p1 I still have the odd SF meal as I continue my diet. I stalled a bit from Christmas until last week, then surprisingly, saying I'd lost interest, on another thread, renewed my interest. So I expect to begin losing again. It's horses for courses so good luck and success to you with your Slimfast diet.1

I did this. I used SlimFast as a substitute for 2 meals for about 3 months, then one meal for another 3 months. I lost weight successfully, and did not gain most of it back. I made two mistakes. One was to not control enough what I was eating in my one "normal" meal - it was not as healthy as they recommended haha - and also I did not exercise. Between those two mistakes, I ended up losing a lot of muscle and became "skinny fat" - a term that I learned MUCH later.
I am not as cynical about it as some of the other posters. I think you could do well with it if you want- and I am sharing my mistakes so that hopefully you can avoid them!1 -
I tried Slimfast as a teenager and was always starving. I used canned shakes and bars and lost, but was miserable.2
-
I tried to do shakes instead of meals too once upon a time (years ago) and it didn’t work. That being said, I do like the special k chocolate shakes and have one, just one, a day because my diet has been lowish in calcium.
You can just eat regular foods but in smaller portions and log that in mfp and lose weight.0 -
What Slimfast will do (if you're doing 2 shakes a day and a meal) is cause you to lose weight (healthily or not is another question).
What it won't do is teach you how to maintain when you get to your goal.2
