Farther or faster?

This is a question for those runners out there.... I am training for a half marathon at the moment, but my miles are not the fastest.... What is your opinion....should time be first dedicated to jogging farther or faster?

Farther. Once you are able to go farther, faster will take care of itself.

That said, don't get caught in the trap of running every run slow so you can go farther. Mix it up with some "faster" runs, but nothing too crazy. Just mildly uncomfortable levels of effort, also called tempo runs.

Agree. Build your endurance first, then your fitness will allow quicker times, variety of workouts (tempo, hills, cross-training). Keep it interestingf and have fun! :)

Further, but get a proper training schedule, so you know the answers yourself

Agreed with everyone else, keep upping the mileage and the speed will come. Speed without endurance is useless for a half marathon.

this sounds like great advice! thanks everyone for your help. It's pretty easy to go far with a 12 min mile so during the training (thanks to hal higdon), I've increased my speeds for the shorter runs to make it more of a challenge (9-10min). But even at 10 min. miles, the half would take over 2 hours... but I'll keep going for the distance! Thanks again!
