Doing this without my family

I am starting this profile for me and myself alone. I have attempted to do this many times with help from both family and friends, but failed because I could use them as an excuse. However, they won't be benefiting from my healthier lifestyle, I will. Not to sound selfish, but tonight was a harsh wake up call. I barely made it a short distance from my work desk to the my car in the parking lot and that was maybe 100 yards or less. No, its time that I get this weight off and keep it off. I have done it all for the wrong reasons before. This time I am doing it for me. They're are many things I wants to accomplish personally and professionally. Its going to be a long 18 months to get this excess weight off, but with what I want, I can't do it with carrying a whole other person. So, my name is JJ and I am fat. I am going to do lose my excess weight, but my 45th birthday, March 31, 2020, 11:59PM MST. I will then celebrate by enrolling into White Dragon Kung Fu School and become one of the oldest/newest black belts of my family's art.

Thanks T.D. ITs a good goal and even a tougher sacrfice than losing the weight but the goal is -184lbs. I figure 10lbs a month should do it in 18 months.

Do what you got to do! Your weight loss will slow down the closer you get to your goal weight. But don't let that get you down. Just keep on keeping' on!

Hey JJ, first off good luck with your goals, if you have the right motivation and a solid consistent plan you will lose the weight. I'm not sure how much you need to lose, but at 42 I started from about 103kg (227lb) and at only 5'7 I was obese. With logging everything into MFP and regularly walking, some weights and then later running I lost the weight I needed and for the last 4-5 months kept my weight in the 65-67kg (143-147lb) range. I'm just a regular guy who tried and failed quite a few times but if I can do it, I'm sure you can too. It's not going to be easy and there will be times you'll be discouraged, but stick at it.

The only thing I'll say on the how to achieve it is that from my point of view, (which isn't always popular), you need to find something sustainable in terms of your diet. There are a lot of different diets you could try but for me it was just a simple maths equation, energy in vs energy out. I don't think there is any need to completely eliminate certain things from your diet. If you love pizza for example, just have less of it less often, but you can still fit that in your calorie/kilojoule goal for the day if you're careful. Nothing in a diet for me sucked more than going out with friends and having to eat a salad while they were eating a regular meal. It just ended up with me giving up and putting any weight I had on back again. Anyway that's my thoughts, once again good luck and don't give up!

Such an inspiration. Good for you.

The only thing I would encourage you to consider is to start your martial arts training as soon as you can instead of waiting until you take all of the weight off. Two reasons:

    1) it sounds really important to you so why put it off so long
    2) It's incredible exercise which will help you take the weight off, plus it's likely to be more sustainable because of #1.

Keep us posted on how you're doing and what you need along the way.

I truly wish you all the best.
