Has anyone else experienced this?

I have been running since I was a junior in high school (I am currently a junior in college) and have never had problems with it. However last January, I started to feel a sharp pain in my hip upon impact when running; it eventually progressed to feeling severe pain even when I was walking so I stopped running.
Around September, I could run without pain again so I built back up to my usually intensity/frequency and the same progression happened with my other hip.
I've been to several doctors and had scans/MRIs/tests done and nothing has resulted in an answer, so I guess I'm asking if anyone has experienced something similar/knows someone who has experienced this and found out what it was/how to fix it. I'm desperate here, not being able to run makes me very unhappy.

(For context, I used to run 6 days a week with 5 days of weight training a week, divided into muscle groups. Now I do low impact cardio 6 days a week with same weight training, still can't run without pain and if I try then walking is painful for the next week or 2)

For a list of the possible causes, google "differential diagnosis of hip pain", then google each of the causes to see if they might apply to you.

One thing that could help is to get an assessment by a sports physical therapist or sports medicine clinic. Have them watch you run and look for possible issues. Write down any issues they find (most people forget). Also ask them if your shoes are right for you.

By the way, dividing weight training into muscle groups puts more stress on the joints at each workout. Most people do better on a full-body program done 2-3 times a week. Follow a proven program. Consider getting your form checked by a good personal trainer, or at least video yourself and also watch form tutorials on youtube.

Just curious - do you take any medication?

I have been assessed by several doctors (PT, GP, specialist, and chiropractor) but nothing they have suggested has worked.

My gym buddy is a certified personal trainer; he taught me proper form for all exercises I do and since I workout with him I assume he would correct me if my form had devolved...division of weight training is what works best for me personally, I don't feel pain when I am weight training, it is aggravated by high impact movement.

The only medication I take is a birth control pill.

Has your IT band been checked? I assume it has but if not that is one possibility. WhenI first started running again I had a strange pain in my hip which eventually ran down the outside of my leg to my knee. Foam rolling made a world of difference but initially hurt a lot and left lots of bruising

I'm not a runner, but I get pain in the outside of my hip from my IT band after heavy deadlifting. For the longest time, I would foam roll and stretch and still not get relief. Then one day I decided to stretch the antagonist muscle by doing third world squats. Works like a charm.

You should go to the doctor if you're having stabbing pain.

Red light pain is red light pain- go get it looked at. googling pain in your hip will make you crazy.

Have you thought about bursitis? I had hip pain after running several years ago and it was diagnosed as bursitis. I rested and was told to basically avoid road running. I switched to “barefoot minimalist” shoes and haven’t had an issue since.

I used to have hip pain when running. For years. I switched to barefoot and then minimalist shoes for a while, which caused a shorter, gliding stride. Pain went away. I’ve gone back to a lightly cushioned shoe and kept my revised stride. All is well.

I highly recommend Merrell “barefoot” shoes for running. I’ve owned 5 pairs.

Try water fitness activities such as lap swimming, water walking/jogging, aqua zumba, water aerobics, etc.
