Low impact at home cardio

I'm looking to get ideas for at home workouts that are low impact, but also get your heart rate up. My husband and I are looking to get in better shape and lose a little weight (20-30 lbs each or so) He has bad knees however, and I have asthma. So what are some workout moves, or suggested DVD's we can do at home (I'm mostly concerned about the knees) that are fairly low impact, but not so easy we don't get our heartrate up.?

Leslie Sansone videos (DVDs.....check your local library) are great! You don't need much space. Because there is no choreography you can swap out any moves you don't like.

Newer DVDs - called Just Walk are chaptered and have a music only option. Chaptered means you can skip around, pick out your favorite miles. Music only is nice if you find her a little annoying (she's very upbeat)......but at 5:00 a.m. it's a little much for me. Most of her new DVDs have at least one male walker.

    Video Clips & reviews.........

There are other walking videos in case your husband is not fond of Leslie - George Foreman Walk it Off series (check your library) more men in these. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x29oq8a_gf-fatblasting_sport

Debbie Rocker walking videos; she's super dry but the videos are beautiful outdoor settings.

I second Leslie Sansone! you might also try your local library. I found it better to test drive the DVD from the library and determine if I like it enough to buy it.

Walking is good. Otherwise if you want a machine, look at ellipticals. I use a Bowflex MAX Trainer and it has zero impact for my knees and back and is probably the hardest workout I've ever done (Even most ellipticals on max settings are easy for me now because of this beast), but it's expensive. Ellipticals are cheaper and have just as low impact to the knees and back as my machine.

I'm looking at a Max Trainer...it is an investment and bad reviews worry me. How long have you had yours?

Creepy Steve! (I don't think that's his real name. He's a bit of a Stepford smiler...)

I just finished 30 minutes on that, burning 463 calories. It's zero impact, but it has a 100kg weight limit.

Yes, Jessica Smith has awesome low impact workouts.
Her "Walk on:Metabolism Booster" DVD even has a special workout designed with the help of a physical therapist for the purpose of strengthening the knees.

    Stationary bike, or recumbant bike/elliptical.

    Have you considered the ymca?

3rd year with my MAX trainer, it's still going strong. Just normal maintenance so far.
