Hypothyroidism

Does any one with Hypothyroidism have any tricks on fooling the condition?

My thyroid was irradiated in 1997 after failed attempts to treat Hyperthyroidism (I was down to a size 8 but that was the only plus ... my heart raced so much that I could barely work.)

Since then I've gained 75 pounds ...
(in that time, I also quit smoking, lost my job, built a new business, moved to a new city, renovated 2 homes and turned the dreaded 40)

I need to boost my metabolism somehow, but I feel like the thyroid thing is holding me back.
I'm taking 100mg of Synthroid daily.

Can thyroid boosting herbs and stuff "boost" a thyroid that is obliterated?

Has your thyroid been tested lately? Are you in the right range?

I've been on Synthroid since I was 11-years-old and you definitely have to have it test often to make sure that it's performing right.

Yes, I go every 6 months for the test and then get my prescription refilled.
I've been at 100mg for at east 6 years now, it was a lower dose before that.

Does your dose vary when you get your tests done?

No, mine's been the same dosage for years. Even after I lost 55 pounds it didn't affect it much.

    What's your diet like? :flowerforyou:

Most doctors say you are okay if you are within a TSH range .3-3 but they have now changed the range from .2-2.0 so you might want to have that check to make sure you are within range. I take levothyroxin some people change to armour or other medications because synthroid just doesn't do it for them. The best thing is to check with your doctor and a homeopathic pharmasist. Mine changed from 2.0 to 2.8 since I lost weight.
  • i am suffering from the same condition. In 2000 I was treated w/radioactivity, and for a few years I was okay, but in 2003 I developed hypothyrodism. Now I only gained about 12 lbs, but on my lean frame, it shows. With meds (75 mcc of synthroid), I have it stabilized, but have not been able to drop those pounds quite yet. I have been trying though! I'm running more and continuing with yoga, but haven't actually dropped much yet. I haven't tried any boosts of any kind, but would love to know how to get rid of these weight! I am even thinking of seeing a nutritionist. Lets keep in touch and udpated!

Hello fellow Hypothyroidists:laugh:  :flowerforyou: I had my thyroid gland irridated (My doctor told me that they will always kill more than is needed to make sure that they do not have to do it again) in 1991 and have steadily gained weight ever since ( The fact that your body no longer produces certain hormones does not help either) but with excercise and watching what I eat I can more or less keep my weight from sky rocketting.
I am on 150micro grams of levo thyroxin daily, what the doctors consider to be normal can be way out from one person to another. I often take Kelp supplements but do make sure it is as pure as possible and keep an eye on how you feel daily. Kelp feeds your thyroid gland with iodine which is what your thyroid lacks and thus you have Hypothyroidism.
My thyroid is checked (By blood tests) every 6 months and the Doc always says the same thing, you're normal I often feel like saying up your's mate you would not know normal if it hit you in the Nu.. , excuse me but I am really fed up with their blaze way of looking at each person and only seeing one result.

Hope this info helps a little bit.......???????.

I have Hypothyroidism (Hashimoto's), take synthroid, and get tested regularly.

I couldn't for the life of me get off the extra 18 lbs that I gained before I was diagnosed, even though I count calories religiously and am at the gym daily.

What works for each person is absolutely individual. And the calories in - calories out plan that MFP promotes along with healthy choices is a great plan/lifestyle. It will work for most. It is basic science. But there are some cases in which you might need to tailor the program for your individual health needs.

For me, I recently booted all "white" carbs from my diet and still count my calories. This is an often debated way of eating, however I have found that it is working for me. I have lost 7 lbs this year, after being at a plateau for almost two years! So I am very happy with my results.

My advice is to try different but always approaches to see what works best for you.

Thanks everybody for all your replies. It's good to know that I am not the only one out there struggling with the issue.

My large weight gain is my fault ... it's not all the Hypothyroidism for sure. I let it creep up, and when I was really busy building the new business I ate out a lot, socialized a lot and ordered Pizza for the family on long days.

In the past 4 months my diet has been good. No white anything, no sugar added, no driving thru anywhere, some alcohol, many more fresh fruits and vegetables .... so I believe I am on track for a new lifestyle and slimmer body. I have the support of my husband who is very receptive to the fresh food because he can already see how much money we are saving by eating healthy.

Sometimes when I get my prescription filled at Safeway, they give me levothyroxin 100mg but I always thought it was the same as synthroid

I'm going to give the kelp a try, for adding iodine. How much do you take? in what form ?
Does *nori* have the same effect ? ... dried seaweed paper used for Japanese rice rolls

Hi wannaBme:flowerforyou: you will have to just try it (Kelp) at the smallest dose for about 10 days and then adjust it to your needs. But as I said before do try to get the purest one you can get, this way it is easier to adjust without having a hit and miss attempt. Just look for Kelp and look at the ingredients it must contain nothing other than seaweed (and something to bind it)= iodine.
Cannot comment on the syntroid as we do not get it here in England.
    Good luck.
Look forward to hearing how you get on with it.

According to my endocrinologist. Synthroid and levothyroxin are not the same and cannot just switch one for the other in the same dose. When I asked her about changing from the generic levothyroxin to Synthroid she told me I would have to start the finding the right dosage process over again.
