What do you feed your kids?

I find myself eating the same things for dinner for or 4-5 days in a row, so my kids often get something a little different than what I'm having. Right now I'm on a ham and bean soup kick. I love it, but I wouldn't except my 6 year old to be as enthused as I am for a week of bean soup. :)

Even if I'm making something new everyday, our meals are usually a little different. My husband and I don't eat much lunch, so leftovers are generally eaten by whoever liked it best, at dinner as a side. My son loves pot roast and if there are any leftovers, he'll fight for them. If my daughter doesn't eat her apple at school lunch that day, it gets plunked on her plate with dinner. If my husband isn't working out that day he eats low carb so we'll all have rice except him.

Our kids are expected to try at least a few bites of everything and they just get what we make. If they don't particularly want to eat something (or they're full), fine, but they don't get seconds or a treat unless they eat what's on their plate first. I understand personal preferences and give the kids one or two free cards- for example, my daughter doesn't like tuna so I don't force it on her.

I serve two things in my house: take it or leave it. I don’t have the patience to be a short order cook.
