I would love for this to work, but if I eat more than 1200 cal a day, I gain. But I'm old so may be that makes a difference.

What are your stats? Maintaining on 1200 cals is very low2 -
And how much do you lose when eating 1200?1

That NYT article is a boondoggle. The study was evaluating the efficacy of claims that there's a prominent difference between lower carb vs. lower fat, but that won't get nearly enough clicks compared to "Study turns dieting science UPSIDEDOWN!"8

I'm old. Retired, low maintenance lifestyle. A couple or four 45 minute walks on hills every week. I eat 2000 a day (female, 5'7") to maintain at 140.
Are you sure you're eating 1200 and gaining?3 -

Yeah, I saw another grotesquely misreported story about this study on Yahoo yesterday. I think it was from GMA. They went a step further and featured a woo-based dietician who picked up the "don't worry about calories!" ball and ran with it. Ugh.6

Prof. Yoni Freedoff (one of the few MD's that I trust in regards to weight loss information) has a nice blog post covering this particular study, and how even the study design contradicts itself in regards to the 'it's not the calories, it's what you eat' primary end point.
Yes, Calories Counted (Literally) In The Recent #DIETFITS, Low-Carb, Low-Fat, Shootout Study
