Why you should EAT DESSERT!

I read that by eating dessert around the same time every day will HELP YOU SAY NO TO SWEETS throughout the other parts of the day.
By promising yourself that you WILL indulge in a sweet treat, it makes it easier to say no, because you know that sweet will come later-- but you HAVE to keep that promise and eat the sweet when you said you would!
i've been trying this, and it's really helpful.
when planning my meals for the day, i plan in a dessert to have between dinner and shower-time (before bed). during the day, if i am tempted with a brownie or cookie at work, i tell myself "you have a delish dessert already planned for later tonight. you WILL get a sweet later, so no need to indulge now!" it really helps. but you have to prove to yourself that you will fulfill your promise. by making a point of giving yourself what youve told your mind you will get (ie, dessert), it will get easier to resist temptation, beacuse you know you will be keeping your promise to yourself, indulging on what you already planned into your day,
just thought i'd share what's been working for me, bc good grief my sweet tooth is FIERCE. if i see it, i "gotta" have it. but ive been planning desserts that i look forward to, and im sure to eat them so that when im tempted with an unplanned treat that could ruin my awesome progress for the day, i KNOW that i will get my planned sweet later. and BOY will it be SWEET! (esp when the numbers on the scale drop

I agree with you 100% on this! I've noticed that if I allow myself to have one dessert, it's just like you said. It's a lot easier to tell yourself that you'll get dessert later, and it's easier to resist temptation. It's when I try to cut out dessert altogether that I have crazy binges!!0

Awesome way to go!!! I totally believe in "not" depriving ourselves. I find it hard to hear(well, sad)folks say none of this and none of that for me. I mean if they are totally happy without, great, but if deep down they long to have a sweet treat, then bummer. Being healthy and in shape doesn't mean we have to cut things totally out of our lives. In fact I think it's when people "try" to do that is when it finally derails them. Unless we are under a doctors orders "not" to eat something, we can eat anything anyone else does, just in portion and not pig out. Year ago when Dolly Parton finally lost all her weight? I remember her saying all she did was quit eating like a pig. Smaller portions and she lost all that weight. It's never come back either
So I figure it took her awhile.

I do this daily. I eat a sweet every night after dinner and I look forward to that part of the evening. On the weekends, I allow myself to go a little crazy, eating what I want but most weekdays, I tend to snack on one portion controlled sweet that ends my day well. Thanks for sharing!0

It is certainly ok to have a little indulgence every now and again, but there are other ways to defeat a craving. Things like eating something healthy when craving something not, drinking a glass of water, brushing your teeth, chewing gum or a mint, moving away from temptation or simply distracting yourself with work or something similar. Take a page from AA and call a friend.
If you think about it you may only get cravings that you cannot satisfy this way every once in while, but scheduling a sweet dessert everyday is the same thing as giving into cravings everyday. Also, if you can manage to slay those dragons for a few weeks they all but stop (allowing you to indulge whenever they do arise), but having that sweet dessert is keeping you familiar with processed sugars and other things that are best eaten by someone else...just my $.020 -
I have dessert with EVERY MEAL! (well lunch and dinner anyway). I always have to top something off with something sweet...even if it is just a mint or a piece of gum....but usually its a yogurt w/fruit, or sugarfree fatfree pudding (kozy shack makes good ones!) I don't overly endulge like have a huge piece of german chocolate cake with every meal, and i try to make it as nutritious as possible, but I feel if you have that sweet tooth, you definatly gotta plan something in.
drewzau - I'm sorry...but I can't agree with you. I see what you're getting at, but for ppl with a major sweet tooth, depriving yourself of your cravings all the time just set you up for failure. Its often seen that those who are most strict and try to avoid cravings at all cost are more likely to end up binging and crashing their diet...and maybe never getting back on track. I feel that allowing yourself to give into cravings, but in a controlled environment (ie. scheduling it in) are completley healthy, and a much better way to go at a diet...and you are much less likely to look at it like a DIET (the dreadful word!).0
