Roller derby works for me!

Hi, this is my second week at MFP and its going great and I'm really happy with the site. I'm 5'8" and lost 3 lbs since signup:drinker:, my ticker is setup to show actual weight if anyone's curious lol. I basically just use the site for a supportive community. I haven't tracked my calories here or anything except my weight loss cuz the litttle trackers are cute and a good visual for remembering where I'm going and where I've been with my weight. I do keep a paper food/fitness log that I can take with me everywhere but never really have the time/desire to log it in here. I'm not opposed to it though, I may start sometime.

I've started to train as a ref for my local roller derby league and since I've been training, I've noticed how out of shape I let myself get. Roller derby referees are required to be on skates, and so I've been skating constantly for the past week. Although I know I'm overweight, I didn't know how little stamina and strength I had. I've been skating with my daughter at the local rink at least once per month and I always did okay but I never tried to keep up with anyone before. Now I found a class for speedskating and it's wearing me out (in a good way). With me reffing and my daughter skating in the junior roller derby league, I should be in top condition in no time:bigsmile:

My goal here is to reach a healthy 140 lbs. I aim to teach myself healthy eating and exercise habits. I'm willing to support others and accept support from others so I can reach my goal and so I can help others reach theirs. And, most importantly, I can't forget that the fatties never last long in a zombie apocalypse. :noway:

  • Hey, fellow derby lover! I have to say roller derby saved my life at least when it comes to fitness. I have a long way to go but without roller derby I am scared to think of how bad off I would be.
  • Omg, I looove roller derby. Where i live they just started a Central Coast team & i really wanted to join but felt my weight would be a hinderence...Plus who wants to see my thighs in those sexy outfits they wear, lolol...Getting into a roller derby team is actually one of my goals :-D
  • Thats the thing... it doesn't matter what you look like in to do roller derby. Its all about attitude and endurance.

It's amazing how physically fit derby girls are, no matter what their size! And the bigger girls make great blockers, though I've seen girls of any size fit all the positions. As far as fitness is concerned, it's endurance and core strength which create a derby player, even when carrying extra weight with it.
  • Hi Ladies,

yep, i know you can be big & do roller derby, but i dont have the guts ( so to speak, lol ) to get out there and do it....And i can garuantee my body is too out of shape for it atm...but, that's one fo the big reasons i've decided to make a change. Roller derby is my goal overall....I couldnt think of a better sport to be involved in as a girl, lol :-D

The BEST thing about roller derby is that it doesnt matter how fit you are, what size you are, anyone can start at any point and it will all be the same. Skinny girls don't necessarily have fitness. But one think they do have is pointy bones - ouchie when hitting you.

For the less fit, well, you become fitter, very quickly. For the bigger, now that *kitten* is an asset - us derby girls love having big girls on our team! I am one of the larger girls on my team, and i am a great power blocker, i have strength behind those hits - and just because i am "bigger" does not mean i am unfit. I could be fitter of course, but thats my journey.

Look up Suzy Hotrod on google, she does a blog for derbygirlslive. In one of her blogs she talks of fitness and body shape and the fact that everyone on her team (Gotham City) does the same thingand they are all different shaped regerdaless. Also shes just totally rocking when it comes to personal mantras (like she cycles to work in winter in New York, as apparantly "shoting at the wind does not make it less windy.." *girlcrushsigh*

I could talk about this for ages. So, instead of waiting for a slimmer figure, just go out there, have a go, maybe join a rec league... but live your life. Make your first bout your goal! x
  • I have been skating with the Charlotte Roller Girls for a little over a year now. I am still not where I want to be endurance and strength-wise but I am leaps and bounds better than I was a year ago. I just took my Day 1 Assessments and while I didn't pass, I am proud of myself for attempting them and making it all the way to the end. I am working on my issues and will be there sooner than later. I am the biggest person on my league, but that doesn't stop me from going out there and doing it. If you want it- go for it. There is a place for you and everyone has their strengths and weaknesses.

I totally get this post, I love derby and would love to be part of it but for starters I can't skate and I feel way to big and unfit. So first thing to do is learn how to skate! I've bought all the padding and some old boot skates for starters, anyone got any tips on how to start skating!!
