This Bugs Me!

So I'm sure I'll get quite a few negative responses but I'm going to post this anyway.
It drives me crazy when someone on here puts up a post or writes on their profile what their goal weight is and someone ELSE sends them a message or posts that their goal weight is too little. Yes, everyone knows the horrors or anorexia but it's not like these people are posting their goal weight as 80lbs. So what if a 5'8" woman wants to hit the 125 it's still in her healthy range. Yes it's on the low side but its still healthy. It's like telling a 5'8" that 160lb is too much for their goal weight because it's at the higher end of their healthy range. As long as it's a healthy range I'm fine with it. Let people set goals for themselves!

I'm here a lot, but I still always feel out of the loop somehow. I don't feel like I've really seen this much.0

I believe you are referring to the post where someone ASKED about SEVERAL things.
The first thing was if within 10lbs of their weight loss goal if losing 1lb a week was realistic.... for most... no it isn't realistic especially when one is so close to their goal weight. She wanted to know if REALISTICALLY there would be a better aim then 1lb a week (to avoid disappointment). Which there are.
I don't believe anyone came out and said, "NO! You can't weigh 125..." according to the numbers she posted... it IS on the lower side, which means that 1lb loss a week may be a little tougher to reach.
She also expressed interest in toning, and would be content with more of that if weight loss didn't occur. It's likely she would lose a few more pounds with added toning....but RARELY at 1lb a week...especially for an extended period of time.
So, it may bug you and you may not like what others have to say... but if someone is asking for help/advice in a public forum, then they are asking anyone.....and everyone has an opinion. It is up to those asking the advice just how much and what advice they will take.

Well that is one of the posts that has bugged me but I've seen a few others too. But I've also gotten private messages about 128 being too low for my height and that I might be anorexic. I'm pretty sure there are thousands of women out there that weigh 128 or even less and are not anorexic. i have weighed 128 before and I didn't suffer from an eating disorder. I've known a few people that did and it's an awful thing to go through but I don't think it can be diagnosed through a forum.
And I know that no one was saying that she couldn't weigh that but she wasn't asking if the weight was realistic. She was asking if losing 1lb a week was realistic. I went back to that post and counted several replies that said that her overall goal was too low.. I just think it's a double standard to say that because someone wants to be at the low end of their healthy weight range is horrible but if someone's goal is to be at the high end of their healthy weight range no one has a problem. They are both equal distance from the middle. Why does the lower end bother so many people on here. You would never say that the high end goal was unrealistic you would say positive things. Good for the people on here that have their high end as their goal. It's about getting healthier, so whatever goal someone sets for themselves good for them. I just dislike someone telling me or anyone else that what they are striving towards (as long as it's healthy) is wrong.
And I realize that this is an open forum allowing all their own opinion and that's why I posted this.. It's my own opinion..0 -
in my profile, i beat 'em to it! "would i be happy if i weighed 90lbs?"
i'm not anorexic, i;m 44.
presently, i've surpassed my dreams/goal of 150. but i why not do better?
i have not had any icky comments, but i believe, to each his own.
i wish you all the best!

While I am sorry that you had negative comments sent to you, it is something that sounds like it could have been handled all through PMs. Tell the people who sent you messages that you don't appriciate what they said (etc, exactly what you wrote here). There is really no reason to make a topic about it when it only affects a very small percentage of MFPers. :ohwell: :flowerforyou:0

Oh I'm sorry that I made a topic about it. I just thought maybe some other people were feeling the same way or had gotten the same feedback. I didn't realize that topics that are posted must affect a large number of people on here.0

I think people are more concerned with the lower side of what's healthy because
a) a generalized chart doesn't apply to everyone since we have different muscle and bone sizes and densities
b) the lower end of a healthy weight can be indicative of undernutrition
c) MFPers are concerned people by nature
So the low end may be fine, or it might be too low. I suppose the high end may be too high as well, but it doesn't sound as alarming because it's not generally associated with undernutrition.0
