If you are new to posting on this thread, or if you are new to cycling, We welcome you! If you are returning from a previous thread, We welcome you, too.

This thread is for anyone who rides a bicycle ... or unicycle, tricycle, tandem, etc.

Do you bike to work? Do you pull your children to the park? So you ride weekends? Do you spin, at home or the gym? Do you race crits, ironman, or centuries? Or, are you just starting out and remembering how much fun you had biking when you were a kid? However you choose to push your pedal, you are welcome on this thread.

There's no set challenge across participants - this is a mixed-ability / mixed-experience / everyone welcome group. Just pick your own target that you want to achieve this month, post that when you join the thread, and post updates throughout the month as you're working towards your target.

Let's get going in March!![/

Any experienced cyclists care to give their opinion on this workout routine?

Aim is to improve my hill climbing and thinking of adding it to my routine once a week to prepare myself for the Spring transition from indoor training to outdoor riding when the current cold snap ends.

    One hour workout:
5 min warmup (up to zone 3)

Then into the interval part, 2.5 minute intervals of....

Seated climb, zone 4, heavy resistance, low cadence.
Seated flat, recovery to zone 3, moderate resistance, good cadence.
Standing climb, zone 4 pushing into zone 5 towards the end of the segment, very heavy resistance.
Seated flat, recovery to zone 3.

    Repeat interval sequence five times.

    5 min cool-down to zone 2.

It sounds like it could work. But with the low cadences, you might want to stay aware of your knees.

It also sounds like you live in an area that is either flat or has relatively short hills? This is the sort of workout I used to do when I lived in Manitoba where it was flat as a pancake. I'd do overpass repeats. :)

    Thanks for answering.

No my area isn't at all flat unless I follow the path of the Thames when it's just undulating. To escape to the country I generally have to hit some sharp hills with 5 to 10 minute (for me anyway!) climbs where you can't gear low enough to keep cadence above 80rpm.

Part of the reason I keep the duration low (at least to start with) is to protect my damaged knees, as I fatigue my technique can go which then puts pressure on my lax medial and lateral ligaments (right knee) and missing PCL and meniscus (left knee).

I'm not a good climber (relatively heavy for a cyclist) hence the strength endurance aspect of low cadence/high resistance and recovery to zone 3 as I often have to make up ground on the flat following a climb.

Would it just be easier to buy an electric bike? Or move to Manitoba? ;)

Moving to Manitoba might be your answer! :)

Having lived in Manitoba and other relatively flat parts of the world for so long, moving to Tasmania 4 years ago was a bit of a shock. It's all up or down here ... neither of which I do very well.

First thing I had to do was to drop a bunch of weight ... and actually right now, I need to drop some again as I put on a little bit last winter and haven't dropped it yet.

The second thing I started doing was to climb stairs. I work in a 10-storey building, and so I started climbing those stairs. There was a time when I was doing 40 flights of 20 steps a day, 5 days a week, but that was a bit much if I also wanted to cycle. The sweet spot seems to be about 25 flights of 20 steps a day, 5 days a week.

Dropping weight and climbing stairs made a huge difference to my climbing. Prior to doing those two things, I was walking everything. I'd get about 100 metres up a hill, and I'd be off and walking. When you're trying to do an Audax event and are working with a time limit, walking every single hill is just not good.

Then, because many of the hills around here are long, I had to learn to slow down on the hills. That sounds counter-productive but it was actually a breakthrough for me. And interestingly, as an aside, I had to use the same technique when I took up running in December & January.

In this area, you can easily be on a hill for an hour or more. They just seem to go on forever. I was trying to tackle them quickly and get over them, and would run out of energy. Being able to climb 25 flights of stairs and chat the whole time certainly extended the amount of time I could go before blowing up, but nevertheless, I still found myself walking portions of the hills, or getting to the top absolutely wrecked.

I started to concentrate on riding really, really slowly. As slow as I could go and still keep the bicycle upright. And along with that, I also focused on my breathing and heart rate. Any time my breathing and heart rate increased, I'd slow down. I was taking ages to get up the hills ... but I was riding all the way up, and I felt all right at the top. And that was faster than walking, and faster than having to recover for 15 min at the top of each hill.

As time went on, my speed did increase.

Now, I've kind of let things go a bit over last winter (the Great Flu of 2017!!), so I've got to get the technique back again. I've started climbing stairs again, started doing some weightlifting again, and we're including hills in our rides again.

All that said, the one type of hill I still haven't conquered is the long steep hill, and we've got many of those in my neighbourhood which I studiously avoid. They are so steep, I can't go fast ... I am going as slow as I can go. But I'm also exerting myself way above my comfort level. And my knees hurt.

I've not had to walk a hill for a few years - that was on an Audax where the fifth big climb of the day was a hill about ten miles from my home but 110 miles into the event and I had borrowed a bike with slightly higher gearing than mine. The hill has about a mile of roughly 7% average climbing but with an 18% kick right at the end. Pretty evil to tackle when you are already fatigued - it's not much fun when you are fresh!

Your hills sound downright nasty but I bet the views are spectacular.

I don't climb many stairs now I've retired, I used to regard them as a bonus exercise session on my daily commute and moving around the office.

Shortly after I moved here, I decided all the cyclists here were descendants of mountain goats. I can be slogging up a hill thinking I'm finally doing a bit better, and have some guy in jeans and carrying a backpack on a heavy mountain bike go sailing past me.

And yes, it is evil to put hills like that toward the end of rides!

    February Highlights:
    • 200 km Randonnee (timed long distance bicycle ride)... actually 215 km completed within the time limit of 13- 1/2 hours with almost an hour to spare. So it ended up taking us 12 hours and 35 min.
    • February Century - my 14th in a row. We've been cycling one 100-mile ride each month for the past 14 months. This was also the 200 km ride mentioned above ... two birds ...
    • 57 Hours and 35 Minutes of exercise! Better than my last couple years!
    • Over 700 km of cycling outside. My goal for this was actually 600 km, so 700 km is great!
    • A 5-day cycling tour in Victoria
    • Finished my 7th University Course, my 3rd of the particular level I'm hoping to complete soon, and started my 8th Uni Course, and the 4th and last one of the particular level I'm working on.

Starting to tick things off my Goals list:
    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/Machka9/view/goals-for-2018-944264

March Review ... (Distances include cycling + walking + a bit of running)

    March 2015: 489.8 km (304.3 miles) = 38 hours 4 min
    March 2016: 917.73 km (570.2 miles) = 66 hours 13 min
    March 2017: 1113.2 km (691.7 miles) = 78 hours 25 min

    Looking Forward into March 2018:

My goal for March 2018 is something over my March 2016 total. :)

As it happens, March is shaping up to be insanely busy. I continue to work full time. I will be in the thick of another university course. And we've got more rides coming up than I actually feel comfortable with ... and we're organising and riding 2 of them! This means that I've got to get busy and finish organising them this weekend. I've also started stepping up my training. Sleep? What's sleep?

It’s warming up a bit here in South Arkansas. I am ready to start riding to work some days. I have a hilly century plan
Ned for September. Wish me luck.

Riding mostly on the flat since i got back on the bike 3 months ago, started doing some hill training, couple of 1km hills at 8%, had to miss riding today because the back of my left knee is painful and I thought i should rest it. I have made adjustments to seat height and position. Hopefully I can remedy it without a full bike fit.

Saturday -- We decided to do a little bit of climbing (by bicycle) this weekend! I've kind of lost some of the little climbing skill I had so I figured I'd better focus on it a bit again. I was slow getting up there, but made it without walking and without too much stress. It's a start!

We had a warm climb at first (25C or so), and a lovely descent into Cygnet. Just as we got to Cygnet, it started to rain, so we headed for a small bakery and waited it out.

On the way back we had a little bit of rain, but nothing too serious. And the temperature dropped off to about 18C.

    Distance: 41.42 km
    Elevation: 698 m
    Moving Time: 2:32:00
    Elapsed Time: 3:10:59
    Speed: Avg: 16.4 km/h | Max: 48.2 km/h

I'll add up some totals later. :)

42 indoor miles so far in March, going to aim for at least 300 this month.

My ballot entry for the 100 mile Ride London event got rejected for the fourth year running, the big attraction is to ride on closed roads including a lot of my local roads and hills. It's a bit frustrating never to get through the ballot when some people seem to get a place every year. Harumph!! :

Did manage to get an entry to another closed roads century though which cheered me up - the Vélo South sportive which is based in the beautiful South Downs with a start and finish at the historic Goodwood Circuit.
(With typical perversity the Downs are actually ups of course!)

    Saturday -- Machka's Birthday Ride

    Distance: 303.22 km
    Elevation: 2,825 m
    Moving Time: 16:18:41
    Elapsed Time 18:18:31
    Speed: Avg: 18.6 km/h | Max: 49.0 km/h

We decided to ride a 300K this weekend for a couple reasons ... we've got a longer ride coming in a couple weeks and wanted to do a distance in between the 215 km ride we did 3 weeks ago, and that one. We also wanted to do a bit of route checking for upcoming events.

The route is very scenic, rolling countryside with views of mountains in the distance and then as you get into the ride, glimpses of ocean and finally full views as you ride right along the coast. Then back into the rolling countryside with views of mountains again. Lots of different livestock to baa or moo at ... cows, sheep, goats & alpacas. And as night fell, there were all kinds of possums, quolls, mice, pademelon, bats, and dogs barking in the distance. And lots of birds all the way through.

There were also many interesting cars about ... a Volkswagon festival largely made up of the old Kombi (a paddock of them in fully restored condition), old Ford Cortina GTs from the late 1960s/early 1970s done up for a wedding, an MG TD, a fully restored mustang, and many more.

Ride with GPS suggested there would be 2677 metres of climbing ... as you can see, Strava put it at 2825 metres. Whatever the total, it felt like there was a lot of climbing. There wasn't much in the way of really long climbs ... just lots . One hill after another, after another.

Unfortunately, I started struggling with back cramps/spasms very early in the ride. The right, lower side of my back would seize up and then all the supporting muscles, even around the front on the right side would follow suit. Evidently, I really need to do more core work. I dabble at it, but it will need to become a regular thing over the next few months. We cycled up all but 2 of the hills toward the end ... walked those two to give my back a bit of a break.

Our fuel was a bit off too ... we made the mistake of buy a type of cookie that looked good but ended up being so sweet that both of us felt a bit ill after eating it. And for me, it had the same effect as honey ... shooting my blood sugar up, and then dropping it lower than before. I had 5 of them on board, and made it through 3 before I decided they just weren't worth it. Funny thing was, I almost brought a packet of cheese and crackers, and that would have hit the spot. Maybe next time!

Also, it was hot ... unusual for Tasmania. It started cool and ended cool, but the middle bit got up close to 30C. So much of our fuel came in the liquid form. For me that's Coke and Iced Tea, or once, because I couldn't get Iced Tea, I went with a sports drink. I rarely do that but it did seem to hit the spot. Rowan usually goes with flavoured milk and Coke. I made it through the last couple hours on the sports drink mixed with a TuttiFruiti slushy we'd picked up.

And the wind ... was actually good for a change!

It was also a fast event. Fast, in the sense that when I looked down at the computer, another 10 km had passed. There are some rides which are really slow ... I look down at the computer and 1 km has passed ... or worse, a fraction of a km. But this one had enough going on to keep me interested in other things.

And today, the day after ... a little stiff and sore in places, especially my back but otherwise, not too bad. :)

113 miles for the week (155 for the month so far) - mostly indoors but did get suckered into a ride on a day when there was a "10% chance of rain".
It started to pour down just as I got to the furthest point from home of course, cold, wet and roads are filthy as well as showing lots of winter damage and pot holes.

That brown stripe of road spray up your backside that looks like you have sharted is a really good look isn't it?

So I have done 35 hours of riding this month. Over 170 hours for the year...going for 800 hours this year.

Did my first outdoor road ride last weekend...107 miles. Did another 36 mike ride outside today. Other than those two rides ~ 8 hours the rest was in the land of Zwift....indoor trainer rides. Just starting an 8 week intensity phase. Time to get fast.
