Turning 40, the game has changed!

Approaching my 40th Birthday this year & I’m terrified! I’ve gained 2-5 lbs every year over the past 5 years. I workout 3-5 days a week but have never gotten my eating habits in order. Age has finally caught up with me

I'm close to 50. The game is the same but now the judges penalize you more if you don't pay attention to the rules or try to cheat.8

I feel ya! I want to do some serious dieting and P90X, but I'm nervous to lose weight with a lifestyle I don't intend to maintain. My body seems to like being 20 pounds overweight.3

You're way to young to have such an attitude. What are you going to do when you're 60 or 80 if you're taking 40 so hard? You need some perspective.6

No it's not age, it's your diet. Weigh your food and log everything you consume. I'm 41 and as long as I keep my calories in check I can lose/maintain. If I go overboard then yep the weight will creep back. Age has nothing to do with it.8

40 is NOT old! It's a mindset. Or something you've been persuaded to believe by the media or whatever. Frankly, I can't believe people still think that it's all downhill once you reach 40. Not true.
It takes being active and monitoring your calorie intake and nutrition to be healthy and fit regardless of age. Don't let a number (your age) give you an excuse to give up.5 -

Scary how easy it is to gain say 4 lbs in a year. About 40 extra calories per day will do it. Good news is if you're patient you can reverse engineer that process into losses with only modest adjustments.5

Welcome to 40! It is a great decade so far (I'm 41). I'm back to eating healthy and finally getting back to running after have two babies in two years. I'm so excited to take my 40s by the horns and just enjoy! My body and metabolism changed drastically at 35 and since then I have to work doubly hard to keep the weight off. Just know that you got this. If you want to lose the weight then do the stuff you KNOW you need to do to lose the weight. Age is NOT an excuse!3

Yep, I'm nearing 60 and it just gets worse. That being said, 40 is the time to take control. You are now more susceptible to workout injuries which can put you in the ditch. Hard workouts are fine but control and gradual step ups are important. On diet, the pounds go on easier and come off harder but you can still do it.3

I turned 40 in August and it prompted me to get back in shape! I lost 24 pounds (so far!) and am exercising regularly. 40 feels better than my 30s because I'm actually taking care of myself again. Don't let age get you down, you are capable of anything you put your mind to!2

I'm 53. My advice is to find out what works for you now to help keep it off. It gets tougher at 50 and then you start getting lectures from drs. Menopause makes losing pretty tough too. Went through it, weight loss s-l-o-w-s. Get ahead of the game now. Exercise regularly, it's great for our bones, heart health, and overall feeling better. I searched out healthy foods I actually like which makes eating better easier and helps me to stop gaining. Here's to you having a wonderful decade of 40's!2

Nothing physically significant happens to you when you turn 40 or 50, people just attribute their decline in health to some arbitrary stage of their lives. Medical issues (self-inflicted or otherwise) aside, "feeling old" results from failing to prioritize your health and take care of yourself for a sustained period of time. Luckily, you can "reverse the aging process" by taking it seriously!7

Lost at 54 during menopause. It came off the same way it would have at 24- eating less, moving more, counting calories.
It has stayed off for 8+ years too.
Age is what you make it, but it is not a deterrent to weight loss.
If you think you are menopausal or perimenopausal, it is worth getting a check up. There are hormonal imbalances that untreated can affect rate of loss.

I'm 38 and pretty excited to be 40. People never believe my age...they usually guess 25-27. The look of surprise when I tell people my age really boosts my self-esteem.
I credit sunblock use and powerlifting.1
