Vacation in NYC, walking, missing gym, weight, etc.

I'm in New York for a week for spring break and I'm always worried about my physique on vacations. I feel good right now since back then I'll always complain and worry since all I done was cardio. I usually do full Body strength training 3x a week but since I'm on vacation, we are always going out and walking and I'm too exhausted to go weight lift. Should I just enjoy my week off from lifting since we are doing a lot of walking? I do try to stick to my healthy eating but I don't deprived myself of other foods since I want to enjoy new things. Once I get back from vacation and go back to my regular routine, will this break put my body into shock and might help me build more muscle? I'm still new to strength training since I started in January and this will be my first break away from the gym/lifting. What do you think?

One week without your usual lifting routine won't kill you! Don't worry about it. If you have the energy, you could do a quick body weight routine first thing in the morning in your hotel room. But I would just enjoy the trip.

I'm traveling for work next week and probably taking my first week off from strength training in over a year. I have a number of little aches and pains and I'm hoping the week off will allow them to heal (plus hotel gyms usually suck). I may do cardio a few mornings. I plan on eating out and enjoying myself and I can usually do that without eating an epic amount of calories :)

As far as "shocking your body" into building more muscle by taking a week off, I have never heard of that.

I would go to the gym at my hotel but they don't have much, also, we are doing so much walking everyday. Surprisingly I don't feel bloated when I normally do. Maybe because I'm trying to eat less fatty foods. I guess I'm just worried on losing my muscle and putting on fat if I skipped.

I admire your optimism that's it's only going to be 7 days off and you'll be gung-ho about lifting the day after spring break, and won't have debilitating soreness afterward. You can easily maintain your progress with 1 or 2 shorts workouts, consisting of 2 sets of chest, back and legs (yes, legs). For example, pushups, bodyweight rows, and jumping lunges. Takes about 10 minutes, and can be done in the morning before things come up. I do some running too on vacations, because i lose cardio capacity quick. Plus i just like it. :+1:

I do want to keep doing my ab workouts and maybe get in a few push ups in along with other leg workouts. It's just finding the time to actually do it since all the walking does tire me out.

Just walk everywhere, lol. Last time I was in NYC I walked 12 miles in a day.

But no, one week won't make a difference whatsoever, consider that it takes months to build muscle anyway (and that's if you're eating at a surplus). But yeah, you can always do some body weight workouts.

    Enjoy your vacation.

Just be careful to avoid slipping on the snow & ice if it's still on the ground after the recent storm.

If you want something more than walking sign up for a class. There are a million different studios all over that offer all sorts of different types of classes where you can pay per class.

I would, but since it's a family trip, we tend to stay busy and going everywhere all day. All the walking does drain you but I'm missing my weight lifting. Can't wait to get back home and get back on my regular routine.

Your body is not going to go into shock and put on more muscle when you get home. That is honestly one of the craziest things I've ever heard.

Either enjoy the vacation and get a lot of steps in, or suck it up and get to the gym after the long day. Either option is better than agonizing over it and not enjoying yourself. Take that from some who agonizes over it as well.

I LOVE nyc vacations because I get to have nyc fitness experiences!

I always book boutique classes near my hotel - soulcycle spin classes or pilates classes for example. You can find class schedules that will not interfere with your plans and you can even do walk-ins. I find nyc boutiques higher > Toronto boutiques (even within same brands).

For me, it's an extra bonus, not a mere "workout": I get to train with an instructor I've read about or "heard" about from friends.

Yes enjoy your day off walking a lot still burns calories. I went to Dubai for almost 2 weeks and I walked a ton, and I ended up coming back to America and didn't gain any weight.

I noticed that I ate whatever I wanted the past few days and don't feel bloated or heavy at all. Normally I do but not so much anymore. I love the view and scenery everywhere I go. Especially at Ground Zero and the Statue of Liberty. It's unbelievable and so beautiful. Not to mention the streets are not so dirty and it smells delicious everywhere I go. Compared to Las Vegas years ago, im really enjoying New York. Not as crowded as I thought but that could be because they are not out for spring break and not all the tourist are there yet. Other than that, I'm having a good time, just can't stand the cold, especially the wind. I even tried their pizza and whatever pizza we had, it wasn't greasy and it was the best pizza I have had. Solid 9/10. I even treated myself to a slice of cheesecake and it was delicious.
