Hi all,
I’m in need of some urgent advise. I am currently waiting an urgent operation and have been told to loose weight. I’ve been religiously tracking for 6 weeks and in total lost 17lb. I walk my dog roughly three miles 5 days a week. Last week my weight stayed the same and I can accept that as I totally understand that weight loss isn’t linear. We purchased a pro form Hybrid recumbent bike and Elliptical machine for Home to hopefully boost my fitness and exercise regime. I have used it 4 times this week just quickly popped on the scales this morning (weigh in day is a Monday) and I’ve put on 4lb in a week!!!! I am totally baffled and feel very un motivated with this, can anybody shed any light on why this would be happening. Thank you all very much. Julie

I lost 180lbs and I can say that this happened to me every single Monday (I weighed every day), I'd swear it would happen practically over night...

It's just water, give it a few days and try again, I'd bet it's almost all gone...

    Great work, good luck!

Hi, I don’t have a menstrual cycle as had a hysterectomy 4 years ago. I measure everything that goes past my lips!! I have been loosing weight successfully but all of a sudden I’m gaining, I can only think that Elliptical training isn’t doing me any good, that sounds bizarre but that seems to be the issue I think. I have changed my goals to only loose 1.5lb each week which has put my daily calories up, maybe this will help ☹️

Measure with cups or weigh with a scale? Measuring cups are inaccurate.

You didn't gain four pounds in a week. You'd have to have eaten enough calories to wipe out your deficit (which it seems like was set for two pounds a week, so is very high) plus enough over your deficit to gain four pounds.

Think about it - to gain one pound you'd have to eat roughly 3,500 calories over maintenance. So, did you eat 7,000 calories (to wipe out your two-pound deficit), then an additional 14,000 calories to gain four pounds? Highly unlikely. As mentioned, you're probably retaining water for repair, due to the new exercise. It's not fat weight.

That's what can happen when you weigh once a week, if you weigh on a high day you may miss the low. I'm sure you're anxious to lose the weight for medical reasons, but that anxiousness won't help. You've lost 17 pounds in 6 weeks, that's a lot! In fact, if you weren't told to lose weight for medical reasons, I'd suggest you slow down your weight loss.

You're not doing anything wrong, the elliptical isn't the cause of fat gain. Focus on measuring your food as accurately as you can - do you use a food scale? - and continue exercising. Just recognize there are many things that cause water weight fluctuations.

I also show a gain on the scale when beginning a new exercise regiment. Don't worry, it'll come back down. For me ,it's just water weight and comes back down within a week or so.

As others have said, it's almost certainly water weight. I have occasionally gone up or down more than 4 pounds from one day to the next! Since you're getting good results overall, keep doing what you're doing and don't stress over a fluctuation like that.

This gain is only from your body holding on to extra water to repair those muscles that haven't been worked before. Its temporary and perfectly normal when starting new exercise. It'll last for several days and then will recede. You're doing great so keep on going.

    All the best.

Those are good pieces of cardio equipment to have. Continue using them as they can help you become fitter for your surgery.

4 lbs gained in a week is likely just water as others have said. Don't worry about them. You are on the right path. Just continue tracking accurately all the food and drink calories. And keep the cardio activity up also. Hugs
