Hey fellow MFP's!! I currently work 2 jobs, and constantly on the go. I just started to run, today I did 1/4th of mile!! (EEEK!!!) I need some healthy and low calorie snacks that are easy to grab on the go!! Any suggestions?!

Replies

  • eek im in the same boat! im having a hard time finding lowfat and lowcal snacks that dont have TONS of sodium! Fresh fruit is always easy since it doesnt have to b refrigerated, and almonds!
  • Mini-Pretzels with Laughing Cow Cheese Wedge (135 calories if you do a 100 calorie pretzel pack and depending on the cheese you get, some are only 35 calories a wedge!)
    Kashi cereal bars
    Sugar Free Pudding cups
    Luna Bars (so filling!)
    Fruits

Basically, creating your own snack sized grab and go baggys of an assortment of different things. Pre-weigh/measure them and store them for convenience. It's cheaper than buying 100 calorie bags! foods like: dried fruit, celery sticks, baby carrots and hummus, grapes, crackers, rice cakes, nuts, etc.

Smoked paprika almonds (homemade) Just toss some almonds in a pan with some garlic, chilli, smoked paprika and your choice of healthy oil (I choose macadamia) Let them cool in the pan. Yum!

great options! im obsessed with the laughing cow wedges, they are wonderful!! And i always buy big bags of foods and seperate them into mini baggies to grab when i want one, makes it so much easier to not overeat

Atkins high protein bars...anything in chocolate!! lol they are under 200 cals..high in protein, which you need (like about 17 grams) and very low in sugar and carbs...the shakes too! (I don't miss my chocolate!!)

apple slices and peanut butter - PB is great for protein AND curbing your appetite
    Yogurt-yoplait light fat free
    cottage cheese - low fat
the little packages of buddig meats - high in protein - throw them on a sara lee mini-bagel (whole wheat) with a little mayo or mustard...YUM!
Cheese sticks...sargento's...great to have for a pinch and low in cals..

Chop up veggies like carrot, capsicum (bell pepper), cauliflower and have them ready in the fridge, plus snow peas and cherry tomatoes. Crunchy and delicious on their own or with dips like hommous or tzatziki.
String cheese, babybel cheese, crackers (watch the sodium)
Almonds or other nuts are great if you have the calories. I've been buying snack sized boxed of almonds and cranberries which are great, or you can just bag up your own portions.
    Air popped popcorn
Small tubs of fruit in natural juice (watch the sugar!)
Fresh fruit (2 serves a day is the Australian recommendation) - mandarins are my current favourite
Muesli (granola) bars are good if you can find ones that aren't overly processed or too high in sugar, I'm cutting back on those, but want to experiment with baking my own with lower sugar levels.

I know almonds are not low calorie but I have found they are VERY satisfiying and carry me for quite awhile as a snack or even a mini meal and have so many health benifits. The other things I pack for work is fruit and string cheese.

For carb munchies: air popcorn or thin crackers (paper thin) 12 calories for one big piece. Most of these thin, low calorie crackers or tea biscuits can be found in the Ethnic food section of the grocery store. My favorite are products from Norway. Low sodium, low calorie. Not like the excessive sweet and salty, big fat flavored processed food from US.

Has anybody mentioned Trader Joe's Turkey Jerky? Easy, satisfying and savory! My favorite. Mini Babybel cheese rolls and yet another favorite: Hummus with pretzels - heavy on the hummus. It's definitely not as easy as I'd like, if the calories and carbs don't get you, the sodium will for sure. One piece of advice I retained from watching one of those reality "Biggest Loser" type shows, was that when you're struggling between two healthy options, always go with the lower sodium regardless of the calories/carb/fat content.

    Bananas
Golden Delicious Apples (they're my favorite and I'm not much of an apple fan)
    Raw Almonds
    Grapes
Seasonal fruit like Peaches, Nectarines, Blueberries, Strawberries, etc.
    Cherry tomatoes
    Carrot sticks and hummus

they way I see it food, especially snacks should not just fill a gap in the stomach but actually make me feel better by being yummy, something I like and be an actual food and fill a nutritional need, at least partially :)I agree 100%

kahla, lets to to TJs together!!! I've wanted to go forever anyhow!

I snack on the Fiber One 90 calorie bars and brownies a lot,
    raw unsalted almonds
    carrots
    celery
    rice cakes
    mini baby bell cheeses
    string cheese
    special k crackers
    special k fruit crisps

looking at my logs, I eat the same things all the time, but that's what works for me. These things have become my favorites and I don't have to worry or feel guilty about them.
